This Is What Couples With Amazing Sex Lives Have In Common, According To Science

Ashley Batz/Bustle

When it comes to what makes a great sex life, there are so many different factors. Some say it's how much sex you're having, whereas some may say quality is more important than quantity. For others, it's all about trying new things and experimenting with a partner.

But a new survey from sex toy company Lovely, whose sex toy and app combination gives you feedback on your sex life, found some pretty interesting things. Their survey looked at 432 couples (including 12 gay couples) around the country who had a total of 2,160 sexual encounters over a period of eight months.

So how are we doing overall with our sex lives? Interestingly, most people rated their sex lives as a C- at 70 out of 100. It could be better, but it could definitely be worse, too.

“The most surprising finding from our study is that the usual sex of participating couples lasts 12 minutes — it's much longer than what the other studies show (on average it's around seven minutes). However, when you think about it, it makes sense — Lovely slows down blood circulation in the erectile tissue, helping penis owners to maintain a fuller erection for longer," Jakub Konik, CEO of Lovely Inc, tells Bustle.

If you want to see exactly what's going on around you, you can check out this infographic to figure out exactly what's happening in every state across the country — I'm talking how satisfied, what sex position they like most, even what day of the week they're having sex and how long it lasts. But to get an idea of what the most satisfied couples are doing in bed, these factors seem to be the key to sexual bliss.

They Had Shorter Sex

So, this was surprising, since we're always hearing abut ways to make sex last longer. Couples who reported the shortest sexual encounters were also the happiest with them. So those whose sex lasted 11 minutes were coming in at 80 percent satisfaction — compared to those who lasted 15 minutes and were only 60 percent satisfied. Short and sweet, baby.

They Were From Kentucky

The Bluegrass State delivered some serious bedroom satisfaction. Couples there said their sex life was a 90 out of 100, while Maine wasn't that far behind with 89. Arizona and Utah weren't so hot though, with ratings of 46 and 48.

They're Doing It On The Weekend

Maybe there really is something to lazy Sundays. A whopping 39 percent of respondents were using the day to get nasty. So if you're looking to up your sex life, make sure you're taking some time at the weekend when the stress of work and everything else isn't affecting your sex life so much.

They Appreciate The Classics

Missionary came in at the most popular position in the country — with 10 states ranking it as their number one move in the bedroom. It's an important reminder that you don't always need to get fancy. Simple, but executed well, can do just the trick.

But They Also Go Rogue

Andrew Zaeh for Bustle

I'm just saying that Kentucky, the state with the most sexual satisfaction, listed their number one position as rodeo, aka woman on top. Does that mean that women being in charge is the key to sexual satisfaction? I'm just going to leave it there.

Every couple is different, but it's really interesting to see what works for other couples — especially ones that are the most happy with their sex lives. So what can you do if you want to improve your sex life?

“Our number one advice is always to improve your sex-related communication," Konik tells Bustle. "You need to understand what your partner desires and vice-versa, but not everyone is open enough to communicate that in a proper way." Keep communication open and the rest will follow.
