The Timeline Of 'GOTG Vol. 2' Is Easy To Follow

by Allie Gemmill

Summer 2017 is kicking off with a bang in the form of another Guardians of the Galaxy film. As we return to the wild and whimsical world of the Guardians, you might be worried that there's a lot of catching up to do. Just how long after Guardians does Guardians 2 take place? The highly-anticipated new film luckily picks up pretty much right where we left off in the saga of the cosmos' most lovably dysfunctional family. Minor spoilers ahead.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 begins basically right after the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Interestingly, CinemaBlend reported that GotG 2 wouldn't be using any real time markers to show how much time has passed, leaving us to assume that GotG 2 will pick up in 2014. If you recall, GOTG also took place in 2014, which we were able to do the math on since the very first scene in GOTG took place in 1988, when Peter's mother died. So fans are led to believe in GotG that when we meet adult Peter (also known as Starlord), some 20-plus years have passed and GotG is happening in roughly the same year that it was actually released in real life. That year? You guessed it: 2014.

In GotG 2, the story picks up shortly after the Guardians have defeated Ronan the Destroyer. Their reputation as heroes is still referenced by the Guardians and talked about by various other characters in the film. The exploits against Ronan are also part of the reason they get roped into working with Ayesha, ruler of the Sovereign people, which sets of the main story in GotG 2.

So basically, you don't have to do you a ton of extracurricular reading or pay attention super close to GotG 2 when it comes to putting together the timeline. If anything, you should probably just watch the first movie right before you see GotG 2; it's a much better way to catch up.
