How The 'Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air' Cast Changed From Season 1 To The Finale

Ladies and gentlemen, it's been far too long since the final episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In fact, it's been more than 20 years, which means we're all officially old. If you've spent time revisiting the show recently, then you've likely noticed how much the Fresh Prince cast changed between the first and final episodes. There were some obvious changes in what the Fresh Prince cast looked like, such as babies becoming actual, talking humans, or cast members being replaced. But there were also subtle changes. Though a lot can be attributed to simply growing up, a great deal of the differences in the cast come down to how the Fresh Prince characters changed personality-wise, too.

As each season progressed, it was clear the cast and people making the show were growing along with it. Characters became better developed, in terms of their attitude, spirit, maturity, and outlook on life. And you can see that by looking at the first episode that a character is introduced, compared to the last one they appeared in. That also explains why the final episode of the show is so emotional; viewers weren't just saying goodbye to the series, but also saying goodbye to the beloved characters and realizing just how much they'd all changed.

1. Will Smith (Season 1)

He's loud and boisterous, along with having a truly rebellious sense of style. Will is... well, Will.

Giphy

Will Smith (Season 6)

By the time of the finale, Will's development is reflected in his wardrobe. He's still the same loud person who entered the show, but he's also a little more subdued, mature, and rounded. Plus, him and Carlton? Bros for life by this point.

Warner Bros. Television

2. Carlton Banks (Season 1)

When fans first meet Carlton, he's the epitome of preppy, showcasing the greatest set of Tom Jones-inspired dance moves known to mankind.

Giphy

Carlton Banks (Season 6)

Some things never change. Though Carlton grows up a lot between the first and last episodes of the show, he's still preppy AF. And those dance moves (thankfully) persist.

Warner Bros. Television

3. Ashley Banks (Season 1)

In Season 1, Ashley is quiet and a little insecure. She's also really adorable, especially in her budding friendship with Will.

Giphy

Ashley Banks (Season 6)

By Season 6, it's inspiring to see that Ashley's become truly confident and comfortable with herself. So much so that the character even pursues work as a singer and model in the final season of the show.

Warner Bros. Television

4. Hilary Banks (Season 1)

Hilary may be vacuous, cruel, entitled, and willfully ignorant in the first season of Fresh Prince, but she's also a total boss. Not to mention, hilarious.

Giphy

Hilary Banks (Season 6)

Hilary changes so much in Fresh Prince that, by the end, she's hosting her own talk show. She's proudly independent, becoming even more of a total boss than anyone could've ever predicted.

5. Geoffrey Butler (Season 1)

Geoffrey endures his job as the Banks' butler with cutting quips and a searing wit, meaning that his dazzling smile is usually full of sardonic humor.

Warner Bros. Television

Geoffrey Butler (Season 6)

Geoffrey absolutely hasn't gone any easier on the Banks family by Season 6. He's still attending to household chores with the same sarcastic smile and brutal put-downs.

Warner Bros. Television

6. Philip Banks (Season 1)

Uncle Phil is the best sitcom dad ever. But he also has the sort of temper that can make him truly terrifying, in ways that only a dad can achieve.

Warner Bros. Television

Philip Banks (Season 6)

Though Uncle Phil mellows a little — to the point where he's a little more compassionate and patient toward Will and his kids — that temper (and that shout) still remain. That, and Phil's great love for a sharp shirt and knitwear combo.

Warner Bros. Television

7. Vivian Banks: First Edition (Season 1)

Janet Hubert's portrayal of Vivian is inspiring, forthright, and powerful.

Warner Bros. Television

Vivian Banks: First Edition (Season 3)

Unfortunately, however, Hubert only plays Vivian for the first three seasons of Fresh Prince.

Giphy

8. Vivian Banks: Second Edition (Season 4)

Daphne Reid took over the role of Vivian Banks from the final episode of Season 3 onward, bringing a softness to the character.

Warner Bros. Television

Vivian Banks: Second Edition (Season 6)

... and she manages to continue that softness as the Banks' beloved mom all the way through until the final episode — even when she's berating Phil.

Warner Bros. Television

9. Nicky Banks (Season 4)

Vivian's adorable baby Nicky is a teeny, tiny mass of cuteness when he's first introduced in Season 4.

Warner Bros. Television

Nicky Banks (Season 6)

But man, how he's grown by Season 6. And as evidenced by his steady stream of jokes against Phil, he's totally absorbed the wit of the household. Don't worry, he's still a mass of total cuteness.

Warner Bros. Television

10. Jazz (Season 1)

Jazz is always a little too cool for school. And absolutely too cool for Vivian and Phil, who repeatedly throw Jazz out the house.

Giphy

Jazz (Season 6)

Still utterly cool, but now able to see the world through frames that aren't shaded, Phil is still not a fan of Jazz by the time the final episode of Fresh Prince airs.

Warner Bros. Television

11. Vy Smith (Season 1)

Will's mom is outspoken and also hilarious. Every time she appears, thanks to a family reunion on the show ("divaaaas!"), it's always pure gold.

Giphy

Vy Smith (Season 6)

In Season 6, she's no different — except for her hair, which honestly looks amazing either way.

Warner Bros. Television

12. Aunt Helen (Season 1)

If Vy is outspoken, then Helen is a damn near whirlwind of self-expression. And actually, her attitude toward life and audacious spirit are inspiring to see on the show.

Warner Bros, Television

Aunt Helen (Season 6)

Thankfully, Helen never quiets her personality down. She's still just as hilarious, brash, and unapologetic as in Season 1.

Warner Bros. Television

13. Grandma Hattie Banks (Season 1)

Coolest grandma ever. Just look at that T-shirt. Grandma Banks is living.

Warner Bros. Television

Grandma Hattie Banks (Season 6)

She might not be repping such a youthful style by the final season, but she's still just as cool. And her relationship with Will is still just as sweet.

Warner Bros. Television/Netflix

14. Lisa Wilkes (Season 5)

When Will meets Lisa, it's love at first sight, you guys. This is the woman he's going to marry... right?

Giphy

Lisa Wilkes (Season 5)

Nope, they never make it down the aisle. And though you might not think that someone could change a lot in the course of a season, the epic love story between Will and Lisa absolutely changes the character. Her spark fades, folks. Heartbreak is a terrible thing.

Giphy

15. Janice Smith (Season 2)

When Janice is first introduced, she's a bit of a punchline when she introduces a questionable boyfriend to the rest of her family.

Warner Bros. Television/Netflix

Janice Smith (Season 4)

However, in the few episodes she appears in, she's given a little more depth (along with her initially controversial relationship). By her final appearance, she's shown supporting her sister Vivian, and it's sweet as anything.

Warner Bros. Television/Netflix

16. The Banks Family Mansion (Season 1)

Decadent and always booming with life, the Banks family mansion is most definitely a character in and of itself within the show.

Warner Bros. Television/Netflix

The Banks Family Mansion (Season 6)

This is what made the final shot of the Banks' home, which shows it completely empty of any family or belongings, all the more heartbreaking.
