If you weren't a fan of Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, just wait until you hear this. Ian Somerhalder threw out Nikki Reed's birth control as a way for them to start trying for a baby, the couple revealed in a September podcast with Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy. As you can imagine people are not pleased whatsoever with this revelation, and Somerhalder's fans are greatly disappointed and some of them furious with him. Bustle has reached out to reps for the couple; we have yet to hear back from Somerhalder's, whereas Reed's pointed us to her Twitter.

UPDATE 1: Reed responded again in another tweet, this one with a longer attached message that calls out one story about the topic in particular. Part of her message says that the story was "taken out of context for the purpose of stirring up drama WITHOUT my approval."

UPDATE 2: On Saturday, Sept. 23, Somerhalder and Reed issued a joint statement on Instagram and Twitter:

"To anyone who has been affected by reproductive coercion, we are deeply sorry. That is an extremely serious issue, and women’s rights is something that is incredibly important to both of us. It is something we’ve been very vocal about, and something that is very close to our hearts.”
“We never expected a lighthearted interview we did poking fun at EACH OTHER and how WE chose together to get pregnant. A goofy moment in Barcelona with our two best friends and the anticipation of our journey together as we went from two to three, to turn into something representing a very serious matter.“
“However, if this somehow sheds light on a topic that definitely needs mainstream attention, then we are grateful for the unintended consequence. It’s a shame that outlets chose this as their way into a very serious discussion, as we are certainly not qualified to be the faces of this topic.”
“We are two happily married people who chose TOGETHER to have a baby. The end."
Love, Nikki and Ian."

EARLIER: On Friday, Reed responded to the controversy and tweeted, "WOMEN'S RIGHTS MATTER, so please don't use false narratives to highlight issues that are truly important!" She continued, "We should be talking about these things, but using a funny interview between married ppl &twisting it to perpetuate gossip is irresponsible."

While vacationing in Barcelona, Spain with a group of friends, the former CW star revealed he dumped Reed's birth control pills into the toilet. "We decided that we wanted to have children together, and it was just time," Somerhalder explained of the friend group. "But unbeknownst to poor Nikki, she didn’t realize that I was going to go in her purse and take out her birth control. By the way, it was the beginning of the pack, so I had to pop all those suckers out. It is a lot of work, especially after a little bit of sangria." He later added, "Actually, now thinking about it, I guess I kind of decided [to start a family]."

What makes the situation all the more infuriating for some is hearing about the way Reed reacted to the incident. There's both photographic and video evidence (she revealed during the podcast she was unaware of the six-minute video, which was filmed by their friend Lindsay) of the Twilight actor "freaking out" and "panting," per Somerhalder. "I didn't say anything," Reed reflected about watching Somerhalder throw away her pills.

In July, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder. Ever since they announced Reed's pregnancy (and started dating, and got engaged, and got married), Somerhalder has been nothing but supportive of his wife. He can't help but praise her every opportunity he gets. He's always worshipped who she is as a person, as a wife, and now, as a mother.

In August, he gushed on Instagram about her after she gave birth, "Just a quick note to you my beautiful wife. You are briefly napping on the other side of the room after being an amazing mom all night so you'll read this when you wake... seeing these images reminds me of those amazing 9 months that you sacrificed your whole being to grow our little one."

So, now, for fans to hear that Somerhalder threw out Reed's birth control, well, they are livid. Here are just a few of the many reactions across Twitter.

Some Are Disappointed

Some Are Calling Him "Trash"

Some Refuse To Support Him

Some Are Writing Alternative Headlines

Some Are Totally Not OK

Some Aren't Surprised

Some Think It's "Disgusting"

Some Are Beyond Shocked

It doesn't seem like Reed is upset or believes that in any way, shape, or form Somerhalder violated her rights as a woman. It's true, nobody other than Reed and Somerhalder know how the situation really played out. All anybody has to go off of is the story told by the couple during a podcast and during the podcast they did both seem fine with the situation.

Either way, many people are not pleased with the incident and refuse to hold back their opinions about the important issue and the topics it brings up concerning reproductive rights.
