New Deets About Star-Lord's Dad In 'GOTG Vol. 2'

by Allie Gemmill

New details have emerged about the nature of Kurt Russell's character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. And trust me, this info is going to blow your freaking mind. In a good way, mind you, but I'd say you should sit down for this news. The story goes a little something like this: Complex recently interviewed Vol. 2 director James Gunn about his new film, The Belko Experiment. At one point, Gunn told Complex more about Russell's character in the upcoming Marvel adventure, and it sounds like Russell's character is way more complicated than previously suspected.

Of Russell's character, Ego, Gunn told Complex,

"Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he's been alone for millions of years and he's learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell. I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill's mother."

Now, there's no indication that we should glean any information about Ego's character from the meaning of his name, but even when you're not focusing on that detail, the picture that emerges of Ego and his role in Vol. 2 is fascinating. This reunion will not only be big for Star-Lord, but having Ego on the side of the Guardians means they would have a better chance of vanquishing their foes. I mean, who wouldn't want to have a planet for an ally?

The second full-length trailer for Vol. 2 promised a lot of action in ominous, epic fashion. And an uneasy alliance forged between sisters Gamora and Nebula for the good of the galaxy. Plus, we'll get to see baby Groot and ponder just how the other Avengers might come to meet the Guardians. Oh, and did I mention that Gunn has reportedly confirmed a third Guardians of the Galaxy installment? Cue my undying nerdy excitement going into overdrive.

This all bodes well for the success of Vol. 2, but mostly it's this exciting revelation about precisely who Ego is that has me ready to pre-order my ticket.
