Getting a good night’s sleep can be near impossible for many adults. You toss and turn all night, only to doze off just before your alarm goes off. But there may be one unexpected way to finally get some better shut-eye. As New York Magazine recently reported, getting more sun exposure during the mid-morning can improve your sleep later on.

As many of us know all too well, there’s no worse feeling than laying awake in bed, staring up at the ceiling as the precious hours tick by. But you don’t necessarily have to turn to medicinal treatments to help you with your insomnia. There are plenty of easy tricks to try for better sleep, including this latest gem from David K. Randall, the author of Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep.

According to Randall, those who suffer from insomnia should make it a habit of going outside at some point early in the day and soaking in some natural light. Why? As he told New York Magazine, “Getting more sun exposure in the mid-morning can help readjust the brain’s internal clock and make it easier to fall asleep later that night.”

In fact, Randall says professional athletes with busy travel schedules often follow the practice, as the extra sun exposure can prevent jet lag and help them to get to sleep when they want to.

If there’s a chance of improving your sleep just by getting a little more sun, it’s certainly worth a shot. So those struggling to fall asleep at night may want to try incorporating an walk in their morning routine — even if it means briefly leaving the office. Who knows? You could end up thanking yourself later when your head’s finally hitting the pillow.
