Mary Has Questions To Answer Still On 'The Leftovers'

Ben King/HBO

The Leftovers has proven itself as the most unpredictable show on television. Between picking up and moving from Mapleton, New York to Jarden, Texas for a season, taking a quick detour to an afterlife hotel, and bringing the main character back from the dead twice, The Leftovers is acting on its own plane of logic and there's no telling where it will go next. One smaller, but still unexpected, development has been the de-paralyzing of Mary Jamison in Season 2 — but now it looks like Mary will be leaving The Leftovers for the time being. With only a few episodes left in the series, why is Mary leaving so suddenly? Is there a chance she'll come back?

Mary's sudden departure — not the big sudden departure — comes on the heels of her husband Matt falling deeper and deeper into his religious theories. Matt refuses to let Mary leave Jarden in fear that she'll return to her paralyzed state, and this fear has led to Mary being unhappy and leaving Jarden with their son. But is that a series wrap on Mary Jamison, or will she have more to say by the time the series comes to a close?

Janel Moloney, who plays Mary Jamison, was bumped up from recurring role to series regular for Season 2 of The Leftovers — and still receives billing alongside the rest of the main cast on the premiere episode of Season 3. But, with so much to wrap up before the end of Season 3 (including how Nora Durst ended up in Australia in that flash-forward), this very well may have been the end of Mary's story — her story ending by taking the risk of seeing the outside world, even if it means losing control of her body once again.

Between Mary being healed and Kevin Garvey coming back from the dead, the small Texas town has truly lived up to its given name of Miracle. If leaving the town of Miracle reduces Mary to her former state, will that serve as definitive proof that Jarden truly is a town of miracles? And if Mary isn't reduced to her former state, then what in the world happened that allowed her to heal in the first place? So, Mary Jamison may be done with Jarden, but that doesn't mean The Leftovers is done with her. There are still so many questions to be answered.

Aside from Kevin's resurrections, which Matt chalks up to him being a new Jesus Christ or someone like him, Mary being cured of her condition is the biggest actual miracle to happen in the town known as Miracle since they managed to not lost a single citizen in The Departure. While Mary is absolutely within her right to leave town, given how her husband has been treating her, it would be a waste not to revisit the woman who managed to walk again after she leaves town, especially with an actress as capable as Janel Moloney.

The Leftovers has plenty to get to in its final episodes, but the showrunner Damon Lindelof has already promised Variety that "We left no dangling threads ... I don’t think anyone wants to see a question mark at the end of this." While trying to predict what will happen on The Leftovers is often a losing battle, expect Mary to turn up one last time for some closure, if Lindelof's promise is any indication. Then again, this is a show that killed off two other major characters via drone strike within the first 10 minutes of its new season and for all anyone knows the remaining seven episodes will take place in their weird heaven hotel — so it's really anybody's guess at this point.
