Based on Margaret Atwood's novel, which was released in 1985, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale is set in the not too distant future, where a fundamentalist government called Gilead has taken over the United States and completely controls the rights of women. In particular, young, fertile women are forced to to become Handmaids and give birth to children on behalf of the richest members of society.
