This Might Be The Biggest Connection Between 'Cloverfield Paradox' & '10 Cloverfield Lane'

Netflix

Spoilers ahead. It's hard to forget the bunker in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Almost the entire movie takes place in Howard's carefully constructed bunker, so, when Cloverfield fans saw that The Cloverfield Paradox also had scenes that take place in a bunker, they got excited. Could the shelter in The Cloverfield Paradox be Howard's from 10 Cloverfield Lane?

A majority of The Cloverfield Paradox is about Ava Hamilton, a communications specialist/astronaut working on the Cloverfield Space Station to try to create a source of unlimited energy and save the world from going to war over oil. But, while her crew is accidentally ripping a hole in spacetime with the massive Shepard particle accelerator, her husband Michael is back on Earth, dealing with the fallout of the Cloverfield crew's successful experiment. As soon as the Shepard works, it collides two or more realities, causing chaos for the space station and Earth, which is suddenly victim to huge monster invaders. In an effort to get away from the chaos, Michael saves a little girl, Molly, and takes her to a shelter where they will be safe. This shelter, of course, is awfully convenient, and shares some pretty strong similarities with Howard's shelter from 10 Cloverfield Lane. Could this be the thing that connects The Cloverfield Paradox to the other Cloverfield movies?

It's possible that the bunker in The Cloverfield Paradox is the same bunker as the one in 10 Cloverfield Lane, but it's not likely. For one thing, Michael's location is never really disclosed. He's definitely in the United States in a major city, though that city is never explicitly named. In contrast, 10 Cloverfield Lane takes place in rural Louisiana, not too far from New Orleans, but far enough that the drive takes more than just a few hours. Howard's bunker in 10 Cloverfield Lane is, essentially, in the middle of nowhere. However, the bunker Michael and Molly go to in The Cloverfield Paradox seems much closer to the city. Furthermore, Michael makes an effort to reach Molly's parents in Philadelphia — not exactly close to New Orleans. Why would Molly be all the way across the country? Then there's also the fact that the bunker Michael uses belongs to a man named Peter, not Howard. (Though, to be fair, it wouldn't be out of character for Howard to change his name.)

The major proof that the shelter in The Cloverfield Paradox is not Howard's shelter from 10 Cloverfield Lane is the fact that it looks completely different. The door has a similar lock, and the bunker has a similar concrete aesthetic. However, the bunker in Cloverfield Paradox is not nearly as big as the one in 10 Cloverfield Lane, nor is it as decorated and sunny. Someone looking at The Cloverfield Paradox as a prequel to Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane could argue that Michael's bunker is the original blueprint for Howard's bunker, which could make sense if not for one small problem: Howard and Emmet specifically discuss building the entire bunker in 10 Cloverfield Lane. It's actually the only reason Emmet is there in the first place — he built it.

As with every other detail in the Cloverfield franchise, there is room for debate and interpretation. It's possible that Howard took over Michael's bunker after he left and made it his own, enlisting Emmet to help him with construction. But, considering Michelle's skepticism at the idea of an alien invasion, that doesn't really make sense either. The reality is that, while fans desperately want to find the thing that connects The Cloverfield Paradox to 10 Cloverfield Lane, the fact that fans are still trying to figure out how 10 Cloverfield Lane fits into the Cloverfield world should tell everyone that it's not going to be as easy as a bunker. Next theory?
