As confirmed by his family on Tuesday morning, Roger Moore has died at the age of 89. The children of the actor best known for playing James Bond shared the news in a statement posted on his official Twitter page, and explained that he died after a short battle with cancer. The statement also notes Moore's work with UNICEF, which his children say, "he considered to be his greatest achievement."

Moore was the third actor to play Bond and followed Sean Connery and George Lazenby. He starred in seven Bond films between 1973 and 1985: Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and A View to a Kill.

Aside from playing Bond, Moore was also known for his television work and appeared on the shows The Saint, The Persuaders, and Maverick, among others.

In addition to acting, Moore was an author and UNICEF Ambassador. He wrote four books, including his autobiography, My Word is My Bond. Moore was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1991 and worked with the organization ever since.

As his children note, Moore leaves behind his wife, Kristina, whom he married in 2002.

A memorial service for Moore will be held in Monaco as the actor split his time between the country and Switzerland.
