Jimmy Fallon Gets Political At The Globes

Despite the fact that he already hosted the show four times, Ricky Gervais isn't this year's Globes emcee. Instead, Jimmy Fallon is hosting the 2017 Golden Globes. And while he'll be appearing onstage throughout the entire night, no moment was as highly anticipated as the opening monologue. While you likely chuckled throughout Fallon's whole spiel, there's one joke from the 2017 Golden Globes' opening monologue that's worth repeating. Fallon said, "This is the Golden Globes, one of the few places left where America still honors the popular vote." Yup, he went there.

As for why this is the joke that kicked off the night, the answer is pretty obvious. Fallon was referencing the fact that Donald Trump won the election, despite the fact that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. This dig shows that Fallon isn't afraid to get political, even if he wasn't overly harsh about the Republican. There also was a joke thrown in about the lack of celebs stepping up to perform at the inauguration and a comparison to Game of Thrones. Previously, Fallon received flack for being too easy on Trump, including ruffling his hair in a pre-election interview. Yet this joke shows he's not necessarily going easy on the president-elect. He wasn't straight-up mean, but instead he was factual in his quip.

If you've been paying attention, however, this joke shouldn't be entirely shocking. In the days before the show, Fallon told Entertainment Weekly that there may be some political jokes at the Globes. Fallon said at the time, "I get to see what the pulse is, see what everyone’s talking about. I’m sure there will be Trump jokes, and I’m sure there will be jokes about acting and the business." He sure did carry through on that promise.

Now with the opening monologue down, get ready for more Fallon jokes throughout the rest of the ceremony. They may not top that one, but he'll try.
