In the 10 years since Keeping Up With The Kardashians premiered on E!, fans have felt so welcome by the famous family that sometimes, they can feel like they're a part of it, even though these people on TV are actually strangers. Kim Kardashian pointed out how little followers really know about her personal life via her comments about social media a new interview. In an interview with the Singapore edition of the New York Times Style Magazine, Kardashian offered a friendly reminder that apart from those who are actually part of her close-knit circle, nobody really knows her or her family.

While talking to the magazine, Kardashian spoke about how her life has changed since she was robbed at gunpoint last year while attending Fashion Week in Paris. Of course, she outlines the same stuff she's been talking about since the incident — she's spending more time with her kids and sharing less on social media to protect herself — but one of her comments stands out as something anyone who follows her family needs to remember.

As longtime fans of the Kardashians know, it's rare that a day goes by without hearing a rumor about a member of the family. This week, the internet is abuzz with news that both Kylie Jenner and Khloé Kardashian are reportedly pregnant, but next week, it will surely be something else. But as Kardashian pointed out in her interview, none of us actually know what's going on in their real lives.

Kardashian said:

“It’s funny — so much can go on at home but if you don’t post about it, people think it never happened. So they’ll say, ‘She hasn’t posted with her sisters, she must be in a huge fight.’ But it’s not what consumes me anymore, like how it used to."

It's hard to imagine what it's like to have complete strangers speculating about your life en masse, especially if their theories are based on what you have and haven't posted on Instagram or Twitter. It's impossible to get an accurate picture of anyone's life through only what they post on social media, whether they're a celebrity or not. Kardashian isn't any different, but because of the life she's chosen, being judged at faced value is something she has to deal with every day.

But even knowing that their public personas aren't necessarily who the Kardashians are, people still get wrapped up in the people they think they know. Save for what she and her family actually choose to share with their fans online and on their show, their lives are a mystery to fans, whether it feels that way or not.

There have been plenty of times in the past where rumors about the family have turned out to be false or missing information, and a lot of them have started from a social media post — or lack thereof. Remember when she and Kanye West were reportedly getting a divorce earlier this year, but here they are, still married today? One of the "signs" that got people talking was Kardashian taking the "West" out of her name on Twitter and Instagram temporarily, but she never commented on her marriage publicly or social media. Or what about the reports that she's using a surrogate, who's reportedly pregnant with Kardashian's third child? A few weeks ago, she even pointed out that she's never confirmed it. Even if these reports do end up being true, it just shows how little control Kardashian has over the public narrative of her own life.

When you follow a celebrity so intensely as people tend to follow the Kardashians and Jenners, it's easy to feel like you know them. In fact, they might be the easiest celebrities to feel connected to because of how open they've always been. Through watching KUWTK and following the entire family on Instagram and Snapchat, we get several peeks into their personal lives every day. And when those peeks come alongside what our close friends and family post, it's easy to lump them in that group, too. But that doesn't mean they're giving their followers the whole story, and they're allowed to share only what they feel comfortable with.

Maybe fans will take Kardashian's words to heart and remember that while it's fun to cheer her family on, no one is entitled to the details of their lives they choose to keep private. But no matter what, it's good to hear that Kardashian is no longer letting rumors get under her skin. It's stress she just doesn't need, especially when she's busy running an empire and raising two incredibly cute kids.
