We All Missed A 'Friends' Reunion

by Amy Mackelden

At least once a month, the topic of a Friends reunion comes up. Even though the show finished in 2004, fans continue to hope that one day the gang will reconvene in Central Perk. However, every time the subject of a Friends reunion is raised, one of the cast members is quick to shoot down the idea. But, on The Today Show on Tuesday, Lisa Kudrow said that a Friends reunion already happened, but viewers weren't invited. I realize that this is shocking news, and it might take a few moments to process.

When asked by Today Show host Savannah Guthrie if a Friends reunion is possible, Kudrow said, "Me personally? No." Way to shatter our hearts, Phoebe. But she didn't stop there. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actor continued, “But we have convened, privately, for dinner and it was great.” While it would be unreasonable to expect an invite to a private dinner between the cast of Friends, the evening sounds exactly like the revival we're still hoping for, all of these years later. According to Kudrow, the dinner party was an incredible and enviable night, but I'm sure you knew that already.

She said, “It was really fun. We had a good time. It was hilarious and we were laughing non-stop.” Before you say anything, I will stop crying about this when I'm good and ready.

Kudrow recognized how devastating this information was to fans, but justified it by saying,

“I don’t see it happening. It would be fun, but what would it be about? ...The thing we liked best about the show was that they were 20-somethings and they were their own family. Now, they all have families, so what are we going to watch?”

Personally, I would love to watch all of the characters from Friends living their boring lives in 2017 and can guarantee that I watch worse on a daily basis. Following the success of the Gilmore Girls revival, it seems as though there's no better time to reboot a popular sitcom and give viewers a glimpse of what's happened during the interim years since the series ended.

Guthrie pointed out, “Now we’re boring, middle-aged people," as if that justified the absence of a Friends reunion from our screens. However, since a Will & Grace revival is finally happening, it seems as though anything is possible. And maybe next time the Friends cast go to dinner, they could livestream the whole thing? That would certainly satisfy our cravings for a while.
