Melissa McCarthy has appeared on Saturday Night Live throughout the spring as White House spokesman Sean Spicer, but she took the helm as host on the May 13 episode. After she came out on stage, she noted that it was the day before Mother's Day and Melissa McCarthy's SNL monologue salutes moms. She talked about being a mom herself and how her mom Sandy sends her flowers every Mother's day (aw!). In honor of the holiday, McCarthy gave a backstage tour to an audience member (and mom) named Joan — and they ran into some famous faces, including Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.
This is McCarthy's fifth time hosting SNL and she used her monologue to focus on the moms in the audience. She had all the moms in the crowd stand up and asked the audience to rightfully applaud them. Then, McCarthy asked two mothers about their children and recruited Joan to go on a backstage tour with her, showing her all the stuff that only the host usually gets to see. McCarthy gave Joan a cool pink hat, introduced her to the NBC Pages and a llama, and they ran into none other than Reynolds and Lively, who McCarthy collectively calls The Livelys. "What are you guys doing here?" McCarthy asks them in the skit. "You invited us," Reynolds responds to her in a funny moment. Later, McCarthy and Joan greet the episode's musical guest Haim.
The tour concludes at the door behind the SNL band, where the host emerges for the usual monologue to star the show. McCarthy tells Joan that she is now the host and then quotes the movie The Help, telling her, "You is kind. You is smart. You is important."
So Joan emerges from the doors onto the stage with lots of enthusiasm. It was a sweet way to end McCarthy's super fun tribute to moms and give another mom a shot at hosting the show.
