Meryl Streep is certainly no strangers to the red carpet, but Streep's 2017 Oscars dress was arguably one of her best looks yet. Wearing a custom midnight blue, off-the-shoulder Elie Saab Haute Couture gown and slim trousers, Streep dazzled beyond comprehension — and for someone who so consistently shines on the red carpet, it comes as no surprise.

Unfortunately, Streep's chosen ensemble doesn't come without a bit of controversy. According to a story Women's Wear Daily from Feb. 23, Chanel creative directer Karl Lagerfeld claimed that Streep opted not to wear a Chanel dress this year on the red carpet or the ceremony because she was not going to get paid to wear it.

Lagerfeld has since recanted and apologized for his claim, but Streep released a statement addressing the controversy, saying, “In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld’s ‘statement,’ there is no ‘controversy’: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication,” Streep said in a statement.

As ugly as that exchange may have been, nothing could dull Streep's shine on the red carpet, or the praise she deserves for breaking a nomination record. Check out her incredible look.

Not pictured are her amazing trousers and "Vanina" satin box clutch from Charlotte Olympia. The legendary actor got her 20th nomination at the 2017 Oscars for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins, making her the most nominated actress of all time. Clearly, Meryl did not come to play. Here's hoping she takes home the gold this evening — but really, she wins either way.
