Niall Horan Is Tackling A New Genre With His Album

The best thing to come out of One Direction's amicable split was that we continue to get new music from the individual boys. Is that selfish? Perhaps. But the breakup seemed inevitable, and if we get music multiplied times five because of it, who am I to stop them, you know? The latest band member to venture out is Niall Horan. And, to help fans and the like get a better idea of who he is on his own, Horan spoke about his new album and its genre in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

As Horan explained to EW, the album incorporates a folk and pop fusion of sorts. He said, "Whenever I would pick up a guitar, I would always naturally play chords like that, and finger pick a lot, and play that folky kind of style," in reference to his favorite bands growing up, such as Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills and Nash, and The Eagles. But, that doesn't mean its all strictly that way. Horan also told the publication,

"Some of the songs are heavier than others. I play a bit of electric on some tracks and we obviously played around a lot with percussion stuff to build up the songs so there was a lot of things going on percussion wise."

Meaning there's definitely a modern edge to it, which I am so here for. The thing is, you shouldn't have any qualms over the singer being able to pull off this genre, because he has already proven that he can. Case in point, the stellar "Mercy" acoustic duet he did with Shawn Mendes at the AMAs.

And, um, perhaps the most obvious sign that he's got this "folk-pop" thing on lock? He's already given us a tease with the release of "This Town." And, he spoke to Spotify about how he carefully constructs these songs from his heart. Check out the clip below.

On the more practical side, he even told EW, "I did write the songs in my key so I didn’t try to make it too difficult for myself," and it makes all the sense in the world when venturing out from your comfort zone. Horan may be taking a slight risk, but it's one that already seems totally worth it.
