Rumi Quotes That Could Have Inspired Beyonce's Baby Name Choice

Like any legendary artist, Beyoncé draws inspiration from a diverse well of sources, so what inspired the reported names of her two twins? One of Beyonce and JAY-Z's newborns is reportedly named Rumi, which could be in reference to a 13th century Persian poet. Rumi's quotes have been known to inspire others, so it would make a lot of sense for baby Carter to be named in his honor.

Other possible meanings behind the name Rumi include its meaning in Japanese, which is beauty and also lapis lazuli — a precious gem stone with a bright blue color (which would be cool, considering the twins' older sister is named Blue Ivy). It's also a variation on Roman, which can be a first name. Beyonce and JAY-Z could have chosen this name for any number of reasons. Hell, maybe they just like how it sounds.

The name doesn't seem to be connected to Sir, the other reported name, at all, even though oftentimes twins have names that go together in some way or another. (If I'm being honest, I'm almost more interesting in solving the myster behind that decision, but I digress.)

For the time being let's presume that the name is in reference to the poet and mine some of his most famous quotes for insight into what may have inspired Bey so much.

"That's how you came here, like a star without a name. Move across the night sky with those anonymous lights."

This is from a poem called "A Star Without A Name," which is appropriately about a baby.

"You are not meant for crawling. You have wings. Use them."

That one I just like a lot.

"Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder."

Again, this could connect back to Blue Ivy — just in an abstract way.

"You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the mighty ocean in the drop."

That's what I'd like to tell my baby, for sure. Excellent advice.

"This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet."

Rumi wrote a lot of wonderful verses on love, in general.

“Life is a balance between holding on and letting go.”

Isn't it just.

“The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.”

This is a spiritual and peaceful thought, fitting for bringing a child into the world.

“Seek the wisdom that will untie your knot. Seek the path that demands your whole being.”

Another good one!

"In your light I learn how to love. In your beauty, how to make poems. You dance inside my chest where no-one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art."

Very Lemonade.

“Dance, when you're broken open. Dance, if you've torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you're perfectly free.”

This reminds me a lot of the Charlie Chaplin song "Smile," for some reason.

“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.”

More water imagery.

“I want to sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think.”

Have to include some quotes about music, right?

If the reports are true after all, there is about a mountain of evidence for why this poet inspired our girl Bey.
