Shower Plants Are Blowing Up Pinterest Feeds

Is your bathroom looking boring and sad? Add some foliage! Shower plants are trending on Pinterest right now, with an increase in pins of 302 percent this year, and it’s easy to see why. Images of bathrooms with plants on the shelves, windowsills, or even in the shower are lovely AF, whether they’re incorporating a few small touches of green for a minimalist vibe or going for a full-on indoor jungle. And it turns out that keeping plants in the bathroom isn’t only good for aesthetics — it’s also good for you and for the plants. I do believe that’s a win-win-win.

Bathrooms tend to be cold, sparse environments, dominated by hard, smooth materials like tile, metal, and porcelain. Adding some greenery into the mix is an easy way to give your BR some much-needed warmth and texture. As Hello Giggles points out, plants are also natural air filters, so keeping them in your bathroom is a good way to keep the air in there fresh and to eliminate bacteria.

Although bathrooms, which tend to be small and wet with limited natural light, may not seem like the best places for a garden, they're actually a great environment for certain plants. According to Better Homes & Gardens, tropical plants love the warm, humid setting that a bathroom provides, and having a shower on hand adds easy access to water.

A variety of plants are well-suited to shower life. If you’re looking for a pop of color, think about adding an orchid or two. Better Homes & Gardens suggests trying out the Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis, and Paphiopedilums varieties if you’re daunted by this notoriously tricky plant — these three types are a little easier to keep alive than other orchids.

If you want something truly low-maintenance, try out a pothos, snake plant, or spider plant.

And if you’re really low on space, get a variety of Tillandsia, more commonly known as an “air plant.” Air plants don’t need a pot or soil, so you can tuck one wherever you’d like. Taking care of them is easy — you just mist each plant with water once in a while (and, if you have your air plants near the shower, they might get all the water they need just from humidity).

The plants in this bathroom create a soothing retreat:

This one is light and bright:

If you have a windowsill or some open floor space, you can create a whole garden.

If you're bathroom is larger than the average New York apartment, go nuts and add a whole tree.

A bathroom jungle may not be for everyone, but if you love being surrounded by plants, go for one of these beauties:

Happy planting!
