Steven Avery Has A Holiday Message For Supporters

Last year at Christmas time, the country was in the throes of a Making a Murderer frenzy. The docuseries debuted on Netflix on Dec. 18, 2015, and told the story of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, and how they were tried and convicted for the murder of 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach — to this day, they maintain their innocence. The two are still in prison but in good spirits — especially, it seems, during the holiday season, as Avery has a Christmas message for Making a Murderer fans across the country.

The message was shared on Twitter by Avery's attorney, post-conviction expert Kathleen Zellner, who is working to prove his claims of innocence. She sent out "Our 24th visit to Steven Avery. His holiday message to all of you," with a photo of a Christmas card with a wreath and bell. Written by hand, his message reads: "To all my followers: Merry Christmas!!! Thank you for believing in me. Science will save me and Brendan in 2017." And he signs it "Steven Avery."

Zellner included the hashtag #UnmakingStatesCase, which is what she has been trying to do since taking on Avery as a client in January. She has been vocal about her hopes for proving Avery's innocence through advanced scientific testing. Back at the beginning of December, she tweeted, "Experts experiments confirm SA's trial attorneys correct about blood being planted but incorrect about how it was done," implying that she had the results of some of the tests she had ordered.

Zellner worked out a plan for independent testing of the evidence in Avery's case in November with the Wisconsin Attorney General. "It's encouraging that the Attorney General's Office was so cooperative and helpful in expediting these tests," she told the Post Crescent at the time. "Our experience in our other exonerations is that's the best attitude in working toward trying to discover anything."

The other person with the good attitude is none other than Avery himself. Zellner also tweeted the Christmas and New Year's messages that Avery had shared with her and her law firm. "Kathleen, you got the best law firm in the world!!!! Keep up the good work!!!" Avery wrote. Zellner added in text, "The real payoff for what we do! Happy Holidays to all the supporters of the actually innocent!"

If Zellner's claims about the scientific testing are true, Avery's boasts about her law firm could be right on the money. That would truly be the most desired holiday present not only for Avery, Dassey, and their families, but all their supporters too.
