Golden Globes Fashion Has Changed A Lot Since 2007

With awards season just about to kick off, it's fun to talk fashion. Have you thought about how much things have changed? A quick look at the 2007 Golden Globes red carpet showcases the fact that a ton of trend turnover has happened over the past decade. Some of the style shifts are subtle — like the fact that men used to favor wider lapels — while others are more, shall we say, obvious (oy with the spray tans, already).

Of course, some things have stayed the same — it pretty much goes without saying, a 2007 sequin-clad Beyoncé is every bit as awesome 2017 sequin-clad Beyoncé — but a lot of things are different. After all, ten years ago, the whole boho look was still in full force, with beads and overly voluminous beach waves to spare. A-list actresses were wearing boring silk dresses with pleated bodices that wouldn't have looked out of place at a 2000s high school prom. The vestiges of the early 2000s pastel trend were still common, and for some reason white, of all colors, seemed to be the must-have shade of the year (the bridal look was apparently huge in 2007).

So, with all that in mind, let's take a look at just how much things have changed on the red carpet from the 2007 Golden Globes to today.

1. Bandage Dresses Still Reigned Supreme

Bandage dresses may not be as popular as they once were, but Emily Blunt sure is.

2. Empire Waists Were Really Popular

I have nothing against the concept of empire waists, but there's something very dated about the ones making the rounds at the 2007 Golden Globes.

3. Dramatic Fishtails Were In

Now that is a fishtail.

4. Pastel Geometric Shapes Were Kind of a Thing??

I'd like to say that this kind of hot mess wouldn't happen in 2017, but you never know.

5. Beaded Bodices Were All the Rage

Sara Ramirez and Eva Longoria both went for dresses with similar boob-supporting beaded detailing.

6. Ties Were Wider...

... and suits looser?

7. Beachy Halters Were Everywhere

You'll still see halters in 2017, but thankfully this particular style is no longer in style (Poor Isla Fisher, the rest of her dress is so pretty).

8. Bridal Whites Were Very Popular

Sarah Paulson was far from the only one who wore bright white with matching satin shoes that year.

9. ... And So Were Pastels (and Spray Tans)

Wow, Drew Barrymore really kind of overdid it on the bronzer, didn't she? And while the dress is quite pretty, it's so pastel it almost hurts.

10. Everyone Had Visible Tan Lines

Even all the spray tanning going on couldn't fully hide all the visible tan lines. Seriously, what was up with that?

11. The Boho Look Was Very In

Between the acres-long pony and the shells on her belt, this look is a bit of an OD on boho.

12. Pleated Bodices Were Strangely Popular

Back in '07, it was all about plain dresses with pleated bodices paired with long full skirts. Major stars like Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, and Toni Colette all wore strikingly similar dresses in a wide array of colors (and seriously, why did everyone wear white that year?).

So, things have changed, haven't they? And yet, some things will always stay the same. Can't wait to see what 2017 red carpet styles we'll be poking fun at in 2027.
