The 6 Most Feminist Of The New Proposed Emoji

by Mia Mercado

Can I get a praise hands? Emojipedia has released samples of 69 new emoji that could be hitting your phone in the coming months. Some may argue we already have more emoji than we know what to do with. And to that I say this: Just because you haven’t figured out what to do with a pig snout emoji yet, it doesn’t mean the rest of us should go without.

The effort to make more diverse emoji is present in this latest batch. In addition to the skin and hair color ranges as well as the professional gender-diverse emoji in the most recent updates, this newest release could add even more inclusive icons. If approved, emoji like a person with a headscarf and a woman breastfeeding could sit side-by-side in a text with the cry-laughing face and the heart-eyed cat.

The designs are subject to change, but you should still peruse Emojipedia and check out all of the newly proposed emoji. While the release is scheduled for June, the new emoji likely won’t be available to users until fall. Which gives you plenty of time to figure out how to best use additions like this canned food and half of a coconut.

Until then, here are a few of arguably the most feminist emoji to get excited about.

Woman Breastfeeding

If there can be two CD-ROMs and a pager emoji, we can have a lady breastfeeding. Those things are related because that technology and societal perceptions of public breastfeeding are equally outdated.

Person in a Headscarf

There are arguably more people in the world that wear a headscarf than, say, a British guard's bearskin. And there are two emoji of those.

Woman Rock-climbing

Equal hobbies and interests for everyone!

Merman

I repeat, equal hobbies and interests for everyone!

This Shush-ing Face

This one is feminist because it's perfect for when someone mansplains to you over text.

Sauropod

This dinosaur very clearly represents the need for intersectionality in feminism. I mean, how did you not see that immediately?

In all seriousness, though, it's awesome to see that the emoji proposals are continuing to be more feminist and inclusive. Check out the full list of proposed emoji here, and cross your fingers that they get approved!
