The 'Big Little Lies' Soundtrack Is Perfect For Summer

Maybe "chill" and "relaxing" aren't two words you associate with the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies, but they definitely apply to the accompanying soundtrack. The Big Little Lies soundtrack has got a nice laid-back, acoustic vibe, perfect for those hot summer nights out on the porch with a glass of wine.

For those of you who have missed out so far, Big Little Lies, which premiered February 17 and ended April 2, tells the increasingly complex story of a group of women (Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz) in an idyllic-seeming California beach town and the mysterious events surrounding a mysterious death that takes place there. Ominous and haunting, the show is accompanied by a soulful, dark, and gorgeous set of tunes that work as well on their own as they do in the series.

I recently went to a Paint and Sip event held to celebrate the digital download release of Big Little Lies. If you don't know what Paint and Sip is, it's where you get to drink a lot of wine while participating in a painting tutorial in an art studio. For this event, we also got to listen to the Big Little Lies soundtrack while we painted and drank. My painting was OK; my wine was great. One thing's for sure — if you're looking for some chill music to sip wine to this summer, the songs of Big Little Lies are perfect.

The album is a blend of smooth soul — like, Leon Bridges and Irma Thomas — and acoustic folk/pop — Villagers and star of the series Kravitz — that feels blissful and calm while still reminding listeners of the show's underlying darkness. It's sort of like a nice glass of wine itself: complex and rich and, in this case, with undertones of Otis Redding. It's a perfect accompaniment for a relaxing night of drinking, painting, or whatever else you find yourself doing on these summer nights.
