Bustle's Editors On Title X + Afghanistan

by Rachel Simon

Happy Thursday, all! It's crazy to think that it's already the 13th, and that spring technically started nearly a month ago. Summer might still feel way too far away for you, but take comfort in knowing that we're already nearly halfway through April, and that the season will be here before we know it.

But let me stop before I get too ahead of myself. It's been a busy, news-filled day, so read on for a recap of all that happened on Thurs, Apr 13.

Sheila Abdus-Salaam + An Incredible Legacy

In tragic news, Sheila Abdus-Salaam, the first African-American judge on New York's highest court, was found dead on Wednesday. Her body was found in the Hudson River, and the New York Post reports that it's possible her death was a suicide (the case is still being investigated). Abdus-Salaam was a trailblazer for women and people of color, and she'll be greatly missed.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that Abdus-Salaam was Muslim. This is incorrect. Her husband was Muslim, and she took his last name, though she never officially converted to Islam.

Pro Tip: Hey, lady writers, this is the best piece of advice Shonda Rhimes can give you. Listen up.

Title X + Planned Parenthood

On Thursday, Trump signed a bill stripping Title X funds from women who truly need the help. Title X provides money for family planning, helping to fund Planned Parenthood clinics, and is primarily given to women living in poverty. This new step is incredibly disappointing.

Afghanistan + What Happened

On Thursday, the U.S. dropped the country's biggest non-nuclear bomb on Afghanistan, marking the first time the weapon had ever been used in combat. The bomb targeted an Islamic State tunnel complex, and the damage it caused is still being assessed. Safe to say this is a huge deal, though, and you'll be hearing more about this soon.
