Bustle's Editors On Trump's Speech + Heather Heyer

by Rachel Simon

Happy hump day, all! This week has been a doozy so far, and I think we're all letting out major sighs of relief that we're already at Wednesday. Seriously, the weekend cannot come soon enough.

There's a lot to unpack today, so let's get going — here's a recap of everything that had Bustle's editors talking on Aug. 16.

Trump + That Speech

Late Tuesday afternoon, Trump gave a speech about Charlottesville — and as you've undoubtedly heard by now, it was pretty much a disaster. The president defended white supremacists and blamed the "alt-left" for violence, leaving countless people outraged. You can watch Trump's full Charlottesville speech here, but prepare yourself: it'll leave you upset and infuriated.

Better News: Obama's moving post about Charlottesville is now the most liked tweet in Twitter history. As it should be.

Heather Heyer + Her Funeral

Four days after her tragic death, Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer has been laid to rest. The 32-year-old has become a symbol of hope this week for many people, and so it's no surprise that thousands of people attended her funeral on Wednesday morning. And, per her family's request, many wore purple, Heyer's favorite color. Rest in peace.

Quote Of The Day: "You tried to kill my child to shut her up. Well guess what, you just magnified her." — Sarah Bro, Heyer's mother, during the funeral.

Bachelor In Paradise + Consent

Last night's episode of Bachelor in Paradise addressed the alleged sexual misconduct that occurred between Corinne and DeMario, but many fans felt that Corinne was unfairly blamed for the situation. Still, fans were pleased by the fact that the show tackled the issue of consent in a serious way not often seen in reality TV.

From The Editor: "I'm glad that the show started a conversation on important topics like consent," says Bustle's TV Editor, Martha Sorren. "I just hope that it resonated with viewers and carries through the rest of the season."

Disney + An Awesome New Campaign

As part of its #DreamBigPrincess campaign, Disney asked 19 female photographers from all over the world to take photos meant to inspire women and girls. The results are pretty amazing, and a reminder that gender roles are total nonsense — kids have the right to explore whatever interests they want and be whoever they want.

Kim Kardashian + Surrogacy

It's been rumored for months now that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are using a surrogate to have their third child, and in a new interview, Kim didn't confirm or deny the report. "There have been a lot of things said and Kanye and I have not confirmed anything. We're definitely trying. We are hoping so," the star told THR. It's understandable that she's keeping things private — but here's hoping that the world gets a new Kardashian-West child ASAP.
