Bustle's Editors On The Queen & The Kardashians

by Rachel Simon

What a week it's been, you guys. It's not even over, but already, this week has been a lot, thanks to heartbreaking news like the deaths of stars Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. Many people can't wait until 2016 comes to an end and a brand new year begins, because seriously — these past 12 months have been way too much to handle.

Luckily, Thursday was a relatively calm day (that Queen Elizabeth rumor, though), at least compared to those earlier in the week. Here's a recap of what had Bustle's editors talking today, Dec. 29.

Debbie Reynolds + Carrie Fisher

Fans everywhere were devastated when, on Wednesday, iconic actor Debbie Reynolds passed away, just one day after the death of her daughter, Carrie Fisher. Both women were much-loved performers and personalities, and their deep bond was truly something else. In a 2011 Oprah interview, the duo talked candidly and powerfully about their complicated relationship, and it's no surprise — although incredibly heartbreaking — to learn that Reynolds' last words were, reportedly, "I miss her so much, I want to be with Carrie."

Quote of the Day: "Being normal is vastly overrated" — Reynolds, as her character Grandma Aggie Cromwell in the beloved 1998 movie Halloweentown. Words to live by.

Russia + Election Hacking

On Thursday morning, it was announced that Obama had ordered retaliatory measures against Russia, a response to the nation's alleged hacking into emails in order to help Donald Trump win the 2016 election. The United States will expel 35 Russian diplomats, as well as place sanctions on two Russian intelligence agencies. Here's the lowdown on what it all means, and what might happen next.

#Facepalm: Want someone to blame for the whole Trump-winning-the-election thing? Try computers. According to Trump, "The whole age of computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what is going on," and that's the reason for things like the Russian hacking. OK, then.

Rob Kardashian + Recovery

It's been a rough few weeks for Rob Kardashian, and this latest news is distressing. On Thursday, TMZ reported that someone, possibly Rob, was hospitalized on Wednesday night, and that Kris Jenner and Blac Chyna had rushed to the scene. Allegedly, Rob had a diabetes flare-up, but more details are unknown. Here's hoping that the reality star gets well soon.

Feminists + Inspiration

For many women, 2016 has felt pretty depressing at times, thanks to the election of Donald Trump and the anti-choice laws and rhetoric occurring cross the country. But in many ways, women made huge strides this year, from Hillary Clinton's nomination to the fact that a majority of America's Olympic medals this year were won by female athletes. And then there were the achievements made by these 15 inspiring feminists, all of whom left majorly impressive marks on 2016.

How to Help: Supporting women's equality is more important now than ever, and there are many ways to get involved in the cause this coming year. One piece of advice? "Mentor the next generation of writers by sitting down with a young woman to listen," says Maya Nussbaum, Girls Write Now founder and executive director. Listen up.

Horror Movies + 2016

If you feel like 2016 had enough terrifying events (Trump's election, Brexit, the deaths of beloved stars...) to make up a horror movie, you're not alone. Friend Dog Studios, though, took it one step further by making an actual 2016-themed horror movie. It's exactly as funny — and disturbingly accurate — as it sounds.

Today's WTF Moment: If you saw the "news" earlier that Queen Elizabeth had died, don't start freaking out, because it's a total hoax. The Queen is not dead, and the "report" that she was was total fake news. Go away, 2016.

What to Watch: Check out one of the many great movies in theaters right now, from La La Land to Jackie to Fences to Lion. You'll want to be caught up by the time the Oscars come around.
