'Cars 3' Soundtrack Features New Takes On Old Hits

Disney/Pixar

Out of all the Pixar films, the Lightning McQueen-led Cars movies have garnered a reputation for their rockin' tunes. The films feature a mix of classic rock and country music; sometimes even blending the two (Rascall Flats' cover of "Life Is a Highway" from the original Cars soundtrack became a massive hit). The Cars 3 soundtrack offers more of the same, with a healty mix of decades-old rock songs being covered by newer artists, a couple originals, and some input by one of the biggest names in modern country music. So what's on the soundtrack?

Browsing through the eight songs of the official soundtrack list, you're going to come across some familiar tracks. There are songs by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, and even The Beatles. However, you won't hear any of these classic artists in the film, because all of their songs are covered by other artists. There are also two instrumental tracks by country music superstar Brad Paisley, as well as two original songs: One by alternative rocker ZZ Ward, and another by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. In other words, the soundtrack has something for pretty much everyone. Here is the full tracklist:

  1. "Run That Race" - Dan Auerbach
  2. "Ride" - ZZ Ward feat. Gary Clark Jr.
  3. "Kings Highway" - James Bay (Tom Petty cover)
  4. "Glory Days" - Audra Day (Bruce Springsteen cover)
  5. "Drive My Car" - Jorge Blanco (Beatles cover)
  6. "Freeway of Love" - Lea DeLaria (Aretha Franklin cover)
  7. "Truckaroo" - Brad Paisley
  8. "Thunder Hollow Breakdown" - Brad Paisley

The soundtrack hasn't been released yet — it's available for purchase on June 16, the same day the film hits theaters — and as a result, most of the songs aren't available to listen to. The lone exception is ZZ Ward's "Ride," which will play over the movie's end credits. You can check it out below.

With the Cars 3 soundtrack, the fast-paced franchise is once again proving that it's the most rockin' animated series around, and that's to be expected when your main character has a name as awesome as Lightning McQueen.
