For the last 16 years, the Fast & Furious franchise has exploded in the pop culture consciousness. What began as one film about something potentially bro-tastic — underground street racing and the dudes who love to do it — has transformed into films that gross billions of dollars on opening weekend and score top-tier actors like Helen Mirren for supporting roles. As a huge piece of the entertainment industry, increasingly beloved by all, the Fast & Furious franchise will receive the MTV Generation Award at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

The newly renamed MTV Movie & TV Awards made the announcement on Friday, April 28 that the Fast & Furious franchise would be getting this very special honor. MTV reported that this is the first time a film has gotten the award. So, along with a new look for the MTV Movie Awards, which has dispensed with gendered categories and added TV categories into the mix, they're going to also usher in a new era of MTV Generation Award winners. Hot dog, I love it all.

MTV goes on to report that some of the original Fast & Furious cast will be in attendance: Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Tyrese Gibson. Plus, Vin Diesel will be accepting the award for the entire Fast & Furious team because, of course, he will.

To be fair, it's hardly a surprise the Fast & Furious films are getting awarded. It has consistently been one of the most racially inclusive film franchises in production. It has been a mega-earner at the box office. Speaking as someone who has a big soft spot for the franchise, I'd also contend that the films have blended action, comedy, and romantic elements into marvelous effect with each successive film. It's the one film franchise that has been with us since the early '00s, which is also a testament to its beloved longevity; it's nothing to sneeze at either.

While everyone will have their favorite installment (can I get an "Amen" for Tokyo Drift?), I think those fans who love it can agree these films are low-key amazing. Without a doubt, the Fast & Furious franchise totally deserves this award.
