The First Lady Of Japan Avoided Trump & Became An Instant Hero

At a dinner after the G20 summit in Germany, Donald Trump was seated next to Akie Abe, the first lady of Japan. And while others chatted among themselves throughout the event, Abe reportedly never said one word to Trump — not even hello. This led Trump to tell The New York Times she doesn't speak English, but a video making the rounds online proves differently. Does the first lady of Japan speak English? Everyone is starting to think she was just pretending not to so she could avoid a conversation with Trump.

"So, I was seated next to the wife of Prime Minister Abe, who I think is a terrific guy, and she’s a terrific woman, but doesn’t speak English," Trump told The New York Times. "Like, not 'hello.'"

Trump told the newspaper it was hard sitting next to her, because they were sitting there for nearly two hours. "So I’m sitting there. There was one interpreter for Japanese, ’cause otherwise it would have been even tougher. But I enjoyed the evening with her, and she’s really a lovely woman, and I enjoyed — the whole thing was good."

It's curious, though, that she reportedly used an interpreter. A video that's been circulating shows Abe giving a 15-minute speech ... entirely in English.

As AFP correspondent Deborah Cole pointed out, "Akie Abe worked for the world's largest ad agency and went to Tokyo's Sacred Heart school. There's no way she doesn't speak English."

Americans on Twitter instantly deemed Abe an international hero.
