As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Hamilton cast sings "Happy Birthday" to Star Wars in the latest episode of The Star Wars Show. Their stirring tribute to 40 years of Leia, Han, Luke, and the rest of the gang is the fandom mash-up you never knew you needed.
While Lin-Manuel Miranda isn't there for the musical moment, the current Hamilton cast does the Broadway show's creator proud. They actually start out by singing to the tune of the iconic Star Wars theme music before segueing into a traditional take on the song. For fans of both the musical and the Star Wars universe, seeing the cast sing "Happy Birthday" in front of a statue of Yoda is bound to make you grin.
On Thursday, May 25, Star Wars will have officially been around for four decades, and the franchise appears to only be becoming more popular with time. I can't think of a better way to kick-start the birthday celebration than with the immense talents of the Hamilton cast. Clearly, someone over at The Star Wars Show had to be an actual genius to come up with this brilliant collision of fandoms.
It's fitting that the Hamilton troupe was given the honor of paying tribute to Star Wars. After all, Miranda's love for Star Wars has been well-documented. In fact, in celebration of 2016's May the Fourth, Miranda teamed up with Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams to sing "The Cantina Song" — you know, the song he wrote for the movie. Seeing the current cast of Hamilton keeping up the Star Wars love is downright heartwarming.
Now, to say thank you, Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin T. Trevorrow should recruit the whole musical cast to play Stormtroopers. And if they break into song, I, for one, won't be mad.
