The Most Underrated '90s Movies Of All Time
When you think of movies you loved in the '90s, there are probably a handful of hits that come to mind. From Disney princesses to action heroes, the decade was full of hype. However, there are some majorly underrated '90s movies that deserve just as much nostalgia as the classics.
Nowadays, you unfortunately can't browse the stacks of the local Blockbuster all afternoon until you decide on the perfect movie. Instead, we turn to lists! Here are some films that you should check out or may need to revisit, from forgotten childhood obsessions to deep-cut '90s movies you've never heard of, much less seen.
1. 'Practical Magic' (1998)
If this isn't in your Halloween rotation, it should be.
2. 'Camp Nowhere' (1994)
Back to the Future may be the most well-known film in which Christopher Lloyd plays an eccentric man whom teenagers are obsessed with, but this movie took it to another level.
4. 'The Horse Whisperer' (1998)
It's one of Scarlett Johansson's early roles, and there are horses!
5. 'Scent Of A Woman' (1992)
In lists of "boys in prep school uniform" films and Al Pacino classics, this one never reaches the top — but that doesn't mean you should ignore it.
6. 'Quiz Show' (1994)
Based on a true story! This drama has Oscar noms and Ralph Fiennes, and yet we don't talk about it nearly enough.
7. 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' (1994)
I recently rewatched this movie, and it both blew my mind and probably ruined my life. This movie has a hilarious and relatable friend squad, a romance that defies logic, and can be deeply sad. Also, look at the shirt Hugh Grant is wearing. I could talk for hours about that look.
8. 'Gordy' (1995)
You remember Babe, but do you remember Gordy? The other talking pig movie is severely underrated.
9. 'Chaplin' (1992)
Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for an Academy Award and won a BAFTA for this role. It's an important part of his career that we totally forget about.
10. 'Election' (1999)
Do you like The Leftovers? Tom Perrotta wrote the novels that both the HBO series and this movie are based on, two excellent suburban satires.
11. 'Joe Versus The Volcano' (1990)
What's more '90s than Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks? Plus, this movie was written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, who went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for his play Doubt in 2005. Let that sink in.
12. 'That Thing You Do!' (1996)
There are so many movies about aspiring bands that this one sometimes slips through the cracks.
13. 'Waterworld' (1995)
No, this isn't a prequel to Westworld. It's a post-apocalyptic wasteland from before they were required to include zombies and/or YA love triangles.
14. 'Can't Hardly Wait' (1998)
It's dated in a lot of ways, but underrated in its cameo weight alone.
15. 'The Birdcage' (1996)
It's not Robin Williams' most well-known movie, but one of his best performances. He and Nathan Lane are an iconic duo, and many parts of this move are still relevent today.
16. 'Welcome To The Dollhouse' (1995)
You may know Heather Matarazzo as the friend from Princess Diaries, but she stars in this independent dark comedy about misfits that isn't afraid to get real.
17. 'The Swan Princess' (1994)
We all know the '90s Disney classics by heart, it's time that Anastasia, Thumbelina, and this feminist animated hit.
18. 'Little Women' (1994)
Some people prefer the black-and-white adaptation, but you need to go on a journey with these transcendentalist ladies and Christian Bale.
19. 'MouseHunt' (1997)
There's not really much to this comedy. It is just a hunt for a mouse. But it holds up!
20. 'Angels In The Outfield' (1994)
Yet another movie about eccentric Christopher Lloyd mentoring children, I know. But, like, the tiniest Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
21. 'It Takes Two' (1995)
Look, I love this movie as much as anyone, but even I'll admit that it took a backseat when The Parent Trap remake came out. It Takes Two deserves a comeback.
22. 'Life With Mickey' (1993)
This movie, in which Michael J. Fox tries to turn a pickpocket into a child star, is super charming.
23. 'Curly Sue' (1991)
Speaking of pint-sized cons, this underrated movie is by John Hughes!
24. 'Singles' (1992)
It's an early Cameron Crowe movie that gets into a severely underrated part of the '90s — the grunge scene in Seattle.
25. 'But I'm A Cheerleader' (1999)
Before Natasha Lyonne was on Orange Is the New Black, she starred in this teen satire about gay conversion camps.
26. 'Drop Dead Gorgeous' (1999)
This dark comedy, which is basically Heathers meets Miss Congeniality, gets totally forgotten.
27. 'The Secret Of Roan Inish' (1994)
It's the perfect kid's movie for a rainy day, about a girl who goes to live with her seaside rural grandparents and discovers a little magic along the way.
28. 'Starship Troopers' (1997)
Sure, it's a cult hit, but the satire is still relevant to today's society.
29. 'Love Jones' (1997)
I feel like Nia Long is the definition of underrated, and she shines in this romance.
30. 'Heavenly Creatures' (1994)
It's Kate Winslet's first film and directed by Peter Jackson. The rest was history, for both of them. The '90s were a diverse decade in film. Hidden gems like these prove it.
31. 'Kiki's Delivery Service' (1998)
Hayao Miyazaki is best-known for My Neighbor Totoro and more recent animated hits like Spirited Away and Ponyo. This coming-of-age movie is way underrated, and it's about witches.
