One of the biggest questions that remains unanswered on This Is Us is how Jack Pearson died. When it's finally revealed, it is bound to be yet another emotional episode. And based on Chrissy Metz's reaction to Jack's death, it sounds like fans better prepare themselves.
"I thought, 'Oh my God!,'" Metz tells Bustle about how she felt after she first learned how Jack died.
There isn't much known about Jack's death, except for the fact that his children, Kate, Randall, and Kevin, were teenagers when he passed and that the way he died will be revealed in the first episode of Season 2, as Mandy Moore told Larry King in June. Metz adds, "We're gonna discover pretty early on in the second season how it happened. You'll get some closure."
Jack's death has affected Kate greatly — and it seems even more so than her other family members. Kate dropped a major bombshell in Season 1 when she told her now-fiancé Toby that she was responsible for Jack's death. "You remember when I told you I couldn’t talk about my dad’s death?" she asked Toby in "Jack Pearson's Son." She continued, "Well, that’s because I… it’s my fault. Hmm-mmm. I’m the reason he’s dead."
Kate probably really isn't to blame for her dad dying, but she definitely feels responsible and why that is remains to be seen. That's a huge burden to carry around for years and Metz agrees. "Like, that's a lot to put on someone," she says. It's clear how much anger, sadness, and guilt Kate feels over he father's death. For example, when Kate was at the retreat, she let out all of her emotions during one of her classes. Between her tears and screams, the audience was also given a glimpse at Jack's funeral.
It'll be interesting to see how Jack's death plays out, not to mention Kate's journey through it all. Fans have only seen small portions of how his death has affected her, but one of the more emotional moments for Kate was when she introduced Toby to Jack by showing him his ashes. It's a scene that has also stuck with Metz.
"That was really emotional, because shooting it, of course, you're conjuring up all sorts of feelings," she says. "But, then, really seeing that she's exposing herself and the most important man to ever be in her life is gone [is emotional]. She doesn't get a chance to have that relationship anymore."
With Season 2 premiering soon, viewers better stock up on even more tissues and prepare for, like Metz teases, an "Oh my God!" moment.
