These Net Neutrality Memes Are Peak Internet

The Federal Communications Commission made a decision on Thursday that could endanger a free and open Internet, so people on Twitter responded in a fitting way: with memes to protest the net neutrality repeal. The FCC voted 3-2 to repeal Obama-era net neutrality regulations, which prevent internet service providers from blocking access to or influencing loading speeds to certain apps and websites. A staggering 83 percent of voters were opposed to this repeal, and consumer interest groups are already getting ready to challenge the FCC's decision in Congress and the courts. Meanwhile, everyone else is circulating petitions and sharing memes to protest the FCC.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who led the charge to repeal net neutrality, tried to respond to backlash with a meme-filled video. “There’s been quite a bit of conversation about my plan to restore Internet freedom,” Pai said in the video. “Here are just a few of the things you will still be able to do on the internet after these Obama-era regulations are repealed," at which point he told Americans that they could still "'gram your food" and “binge watch your favorite shows."

Given that Pai just voted to give internet service providers much more control over Americans' Internet use, however, social media users were far from amused. Nonetheless, they made the most of the situation by producing some fantastic memes.

The ACLU is already circulating a petition to pressure Congress into rejecting the FCC's vote, and consumer interest groups like Free Press are considering a lawsuit against the FCC. Even though the FCC has already voted, there is still time to call your elected officials and tell them to defend net neutrality.
