Jon Stewart's Best Quote From 'Late 'Show' Visit

by Joseph D. Lyons

On his Jan. 31 show, Stephen Colbert was joined by an old friend and mentor who could well become a guiding voice in American politics once again. Jon Stewart, the former host of The Daily Show, where Colbert got his start, was back on late night television with warnings and advice for how to deal with Donald Trump's presidency. He started off joking, but this quote from Stewart's Colbert appearance probably sums up how you feel about Trump.

Stewart started off the show in full joke mode. He came onstage styled after the president with a tie that was way too long and a dead animal tied to his head. He continued to joke about upcoming executive orders that Trump would make, including an order to China to deliver its wall to the Mexican border COD (for Mexico to pay for of course). Another would prohibit the official language of the country, especially for everyone working at the White House.

The quote came as part of his facetious third executive order from the office of President Trump. "I, Donald Day Trump, do declare by executive order that I, Donald J. Trump, am exhausting," Stewart tells the audience, before getting to the best quote of the show:

The presidency is supposed to age the president, not the public.

Then Stewart went on to explain why Trump is so exhausting, and what the American people have to do about it. Stewart continues speaking as if he were Trump: "The reason that Donald J. Trump is exhausting is that every instinct and fiber of my pathological self-regard calls me to abuse of power. I, Donald J. Trump, want — no, deserve — not just your respect but your adoration," Stewart tells the audience.

But not all is lost even if Stewart paints a scary picture. "It is going to take relentless stamina, vigilance and every institutional check and balance this great country can muster to keep me, Donald J. Trump, from going full Palpatine, with the lighting coming out of the fingertips. 'Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate,'" Stewart warns. "We have never faced this before, purposeful vindictive chaos."

But he thinks that there's a chance that Trump's plans can be headed off. "But perhaps therein lies the saving grace of my, Donald J. Trump's presidency," Stewart says as Trump:

No one action will be adequate. All actions will be necessary. And if we do not allow Donald Trump to exhaust our fight, and somehow come through this presidency calamity-less and constitutionally partially intact, then I, Donald J. Trump, will have demonstrated the greatness of America — just not the way I thought I was gonna.

Don't discount what Stewart said just because of the funny way he presented this call to resistance. Trump's actions with regards to the immigration and refugee ban have been troubling at best. Do what you can, even if Trump is doing his best to wear you out.
