On Wednesday, the Trump administration withdrew transgender bathroom access protections developed under the Obama administration, which provided guidelines on making bathrooms available to transgender students and instructing schools to allow trans students to use the bathroom of their choice. Understandably, many are not happy with the decision, including some celebrities. For example, Sophia Bush is now supporting transgender kids in more ways than one through just a simple Instagram.
The Chicago P.D. actor took to the social media network Thursday and shared an image reading, "This account supports the protection of trans kids." She isn't beating around the bush and quickly gets to the point: She supports the transgender community, especially young individuals, who live in fear and continue to fight for their rights.
Alongside the IG, the former One Tree Hill star provided a harrowing statistic stating, "1 in 3 trans youth has tried to commit suicide." It's unclear where Bush got her statistic, but according to The Trevor Project, one out of six students across the nation in grades 9-12 have "seriously considered suicide in the past year." Furthermore, the LGBTQ organization reports that a national study for the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey determined "40 percent of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt" and that "92 percent of these individuals reported having attempted suicide before the age of 25."
According to an August 2015 USA Today report discussing suicide in relation to transgender individuals coming from a study conducted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Williams Institute, "41 percent try to kill themselves at some point in their lives, compared with 4.6 percent of the general public."
Due to the fact that transgender people are more likely to attempt suicide, Bush, and many others, believe, "These kids need more protection, not less." That's exactly why she's speaking out against Trump's administration rescinding the bathroom protections.
Bush isn't going anywhere and will do whatever it takes to help those in need. She vowed to do just that when she wrote the following next to her powerful Instagram,
The Trump administration may be trading on fear, and they may be abandoning you but please know, my trans brothers and sisters, that you have allies. Myself included. We will take to the streets and march for you. You are seen. You are known. You are loved. You have resources.
Speaking of such resources, she took the liberty of tagging groups on the image above guiding those in need of assistance to the right place. Those groups include, GLSEN, The Trevor Project, Women's March, and the Human Rights Campaign. All of these organizations stand up for the rights of people and believe everyone deserves to be treated equally.
Bush hears transgender kids, sees them, and stands with them. She clearly isn't going to let this action by the Trump administration deter her from fighting for what she believes is right, all while helping transgender kids in the process.
