This Artist Tattoos Extremely Ugly Designs On Purpose & Customers Are Lining Up

by Rosie Narasaki

Well, it turns out "trash tattoos" are the latest viral ink trend. Sure, the concept may sound strange at first, but you'll understand the hype once you peep the offbeat designs in question. Heck, maybe you'll even want a cheeky "ugly" tattoo yourself.

Helena Fernandes is a tattoo artist based in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil who has become famous for her distinctive style — and that particular distinction is a complete lack of conventional drawing skill. Her Instagram bio includes the Portuguese words "tatuagen peba," which translates to "trash tattoos" — and that's pretty much Fernandes' work in a nutshell.

Though her designs lack the hyperrealism of the work of celebrity tattoo artist Dr. Woo or the precise minimalist attention to detail of the well-known and well-loved Jonboy, there's a certain charm to her work. And it's easy to see why her unique art has gone viral.

With quirky reimaginings of Pink Floyd's iconic Dark Side of the Moon logo, raccoons that look like the frenzied doodles of a third grader, and a whole host of poorly rendered superheroes making up her portfolio, there's definitely a sense of personality and whimsy to Fernandes' work -- as "ugly" as it may be.

I mean, come on. That's a lot of personality encapsulated in that one hapless pigeon.

And what medical professional doesn't want this quirky caduceus, complete with expressive snake faces, uneven laurel wreaths, and a physics-defying staff?

Another highlight? This creative reimagining of The Lion King's popular dynamic duo, Timon and Pumbaa.

And look at these adorable cartoon faces haphazardly inked on feet. What's not to love?

That said, getting a tattoo is a huge commitment. So would you ever consider getting an ugly tattoo like this howling bat? It's anything but basic, that's for sure.
