After thousands gathered in Boston to counter-protest the "Boston Free Speech" rally on Saturday, Donald Trump turned to Twitter to share his thoughts on the day's major event. The rally arrived a week after the gruesome and deadly far-right white supremacist march, Unite The Right, in Charlottesville, Virginia. And while the president ruminated over the current political climate in the United States, it became clear that Trump didn't know how to spell "heal."
Now, typos happen all the time. If you keep an eye on Twitter, you will notice how frequent these little mistakes are. From misplaced commas to poorly-spelled rants, Twitter is home to quite a few linguistic fumbles. And it's OK — we're human. But in Trump's case, it didn't take one or two attempts to get the spelling of "heal" right. It took more.
In his original tweet, Trump said, "Our great country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need protest in order to heel, and we will heel, and be stronger than ever before!"
Now that tweet is gone. A new one appeared with the correct spelling of "heal" very shortly after Twitter users couldn't stop laughing and pointed the misspelling out. But Trump forgot that screenshots are forever. Right below his new tweet, Twitter users brought attention back to the infamous "heel."
Social media users made sure to remind Trump that they wouldn't forget the quadruple blunder. Some reminded him of how he had bragged about his purported intelligence.
Others reminded him he could do it.
Some couldn't help but marvel.
One user congratulated him.
And, of course, a good ol' Simpsons' joke is never lost on such an occasion.
"Heel" isn't the first time The Donald has misspelled. In fact, various news media websites have made a consistent effort to keep track of the president's mishaps in the English language.
Back in May, we saw Trump send a cryptic tweet with "covfefe" which reportedly was him trying to say "coverage." In the same month, Trump tweeted about former Attorney General Sally Yates and said, "Ask Sally Yates, under oath, if she knows how classified information got into the newspapers soon after she explained it to W.H. Council." In this case, "council" didn't make sense and Trump later on deleted the tweet and used the correct word: counsel.
Prior to becoming the president, Trump tweeted, "China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters - rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented act." Clearly, Trump meant "unprecedented," which was why the tweet deleted and replaced with the correct spelling. Other words Trump has misspelled include "tapp" which is probably "tap," "to" instead of "too," and other little hiccups from the leader of the world's superpower.
If Trump continues to keep his misspellings up, we might look forward to a new language in the United States.
