This Woman Turns Your Trolls' Comments Into Cake

by Lara Rutherford-Morrison

It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of trolling. If you respond, you only feed the beast, and if you don’t, you feel powerless. But a bakery service is offering a new way to fire back: Put your troll’s comment on a cake and send it to them. Your lucky troll will be greeted at the door by their very own customized “Troll Cake,” decorated with that stupidly mean thing they wrote to you. If there’s anything that can drive home how absurd a comment is, it’s seeing that comment written on a cake and decorated with sprinkles. It’s the perfect blend of sweetness and savagery.

Troll Cakes is a Brooklyn-based bakery and detective agency founded by Kat Thek. Thek told the Huffington Post that her inspiration for Troll Cakes began with an unexpected source: Country music legend Dolly Parton. “The troll that really sparked the whole enterprise was on Dolly Parton’s Facebook page,” Thek explained. “There was something simultaneously infuriating and hilarious about seeing somebody try to bully Dolly Parton. I mean, who would do that?” She continued, “Trolling anyone, especially Dolly Parton, is like aggressively giving the finger to a sunset or a panda or bag of craisins. You’re just letting everybody around you know that you’re a grumpy idiot.”

And what better way to respond to that grumpy idiocy than by immortalizing it in cake? “When someone says something mean, it’s just funny to put it on a cake,” Thek told PIX11. “You can’t take a troll seriously, it’s just an idiot who said something and if somebody wants to yell ‘I’m a huge idiot’ I think it’s our duty to let them do that and put it on a cake and make them see how it looks.”

Here’s how it works: For $35, you can submit a nasty comment you’ve received and your troll’s address to Troll Cakes. The bakers will decorate a cake with your comment, box it up, and send it to your troll. The box will contain a copy of the troll’s original comment. If you don’t know where your hater lives, no problem — for $60, Troll Cakes will make your cake, do some detective work to find your troll’s address, and ship it.

Sending a cake to a troll might seem like an example of killing someone with kindness, but the Troll Cakes website emphasizes that, whatever shame your troll might feel upon being reminded (in cake!) of their useless yelling into the void, Troll Cakes are totally safe to eat and yummy, to boot. Each cake is made up of a “chocolate chip brownie with whipped frosting and assorted colorful sprinkles and icing.”

Troll Cakes isn’t only for everyday, run-of-the-mill trolls; the baking company has a special deal set up for perhaps the greatest troll of them all. For $30, you can get the “Tiny Hands Special,” a cake with your favorite Donald Trump tweet, sent to the White House. The cake below, for example, features an abridged version of a quotation from Trump’s recent AP interview, in which he said that his appearance on Face the Nation brought in “the highest [ratings] for 'Deface the Nation' since the World Trade Center — since the World Trade Center came down.”
