Viola Davis Has Won Her First Oscar

No surprises here: at the 2017 Oscars, Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for her work co-starring in the Best Picture nominated-movie Fences. Davis was long considered the frontrunner for the award, as her powerful performance in Fences has received major acclaim, and the actor has picked up a many other honors in the months leading up to Sunday's show. Still, even if Davis' Oscar win doesn't come as a shock to anyone, it's great to see her take home such a well-deserved prize.

In winning the Oscar, Davis beat out an impressive crop of contenders: Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), and Nicole Kidman (Lion). All of these women gave fantastic performances in their respective films, but few people doubted that Davis would be the one to take home the prize on Sunday night.

The only shock is that Davis' Oscar is the actor's first, despite a career full of impressive performances. Previously, she'd been nominated in 2009, for Best Supporting Actress for Doubt, and in 2012, for Best Actress for The Help. Yet she'd lost out each time, and so her win this year is even more special.

Congrats to Davis on such a highly-deserved win.
