Here Are The Different Ouai Hair Supplements

by Alexa Tucker

There are literally thousands of topical hair care products out there that promise to restore your locks to ultimate luster, no matter what dilemma you're looking to solve. The latest beauty trend though, from hair to skin to nails, is about working from the inside out (rather than the other way around). Supplements have been gaining traction as tickets to healthier hair, and Jen Atkin's new Ouai hair supplements are major players in the game.

There are three different products designed to target different hair concerns: Dry Hair, Oily Scalp, and Thinning Hair. Each one contains a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients geared toward solving your biggest hair woes.

The supplements have some overlap — they all contain amino acids to support healthy keratin production, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids for shine (also found in fish oil), and biotin, a B vitamin that's popular for speeding hair and nail growth. The other key elements of each are tailored to specific issues.

One important thing worth noting: Supplements and multivitamins in general are a bit controversial among medical pros in their effectiveness, because if you're eating healthy, you're probably covering your bases when it comes to many vitamins and minerals (your body doesn't use "extra," so you won't see added benefits from taking more than you need). Some vitamins and minerals are also absorbed better than others. However, supplements can be useful in filling in the gaps, and these ones in particular make sure you're topped up on nutrients that are key to healthy, strong hair.

They'll be available at theouai.com ($28 for 30 tablets) starting in April 2017. Each is taken once a day with water (because hydration has serious beauty benefits, too), and results can be expected in about 90 days. Ouai? No Ouai! (Sorry, had to.) Here's an overview of all three supplements in the line and their other important ingredients.

1. Dry Hair Supplements

This supplement gives dry hair a moisture boost. It's also great for adding shine, strengthening, and preventing breakage. Notable ingredients include silica, a popular nutrient for silky, shiny hair, and tocopherols, which are nutrients said to strengthen hair.

2. Oily Scalp Supplements

Wouldn't dare going a day without shampooing? This was made for you. It promises to rebalance sebum production and help regulate oil glands with green tea extract and niacin. It also boosts shine (so getting control of the oil won't leave you with lackluster hair).

3. Thinning Hair Supplements

If you're after thicker hair, this supplement contains MSM, which is a sulfur-based compound that increases hair growth, according to Ouai. It also contains ashwagandha, an Ayurvedic herb that reportedly reduces cortisol, a stress hormone in the body. (If you've ever felt like your hair was falling out in times of insane stress, you're not crazy — the two are related, according to Mayo Clinic.)
