Drake Hints At Past Drama With Ludacris During The BBMAs

It's usually obvious when two rappers don't get along, from 50 Cent and Kanye West, to Drake and Meek Mill (and, of course, the all-time standard bearers, Biggie and Tupac). But when Drake was accepting a Billboard Music Award on Sunday, he called over to host Ludacris, saying, "I know we haven't always seen eye to eye" and "I got a lot of love for you," suggesting that the two at one point had a problem... that somehow went totally under the radar. Seriously, what happened between Drake & Ludacris? Turns out, these two do have some history, but it certainly isn't one of rap's iconic rivalries.

In 2011, Drake and Big Sean reportedly accused Ludacris of stealing their "Supa Dupa" flow, which resulted in Ludacris' release of "Bada Boom," a diss track directed at the pair. Ludacris had years of experience on Drake, whose Hashtag Rap was still a relatively new style. Some of the key "Bada Boom" lyrics include, "Counterfeit rappers say I’m stealing their flows," and "Flows will get recycled and passed around to different names / But what's the same, that every verse I spit is insane."

And in 2012, in a Vibe interview, Drake addressed criticism from a whole host of rappers, including Luda, and said,

"They want me to be more emotionally disconnected like them, so I drop the ball and fall off. That’s where the backlash comes from. They want you to under-deliver so badly, and when you don’t they can’t handle it."

And he specifically acknowledged Ludacris by saying, "That’s a case of somebody trying to use my marketing money to get things going again for themselves. That didn’t affect my day, my month, my year. I didn’t take any of that seriously."

Even at the time, Drake wasn't all that upset about his intermittent Ludacris clashes. So now, years later, as an award-winning, highly accepted member of the hip-hop community? There's certainly no reason to hold onto old conflicts when experiencing as much success as Drake (and Luda, who's now also one of the Fast & Furious stars) is right now. It's no wonder that bygones are bygones in this barely-registering beef.
