The MTV Movie Awards are back, but with one major change. The awards ceremony with popcorn trophies now honors both film and television. So, this year marks the first-ever MTV Movie & TV Awards. So, when can you catch this historic MTV event? What time are the MTV Movie & TV Awards?

They kick off at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday, May 7 on MTV. The first ever Movie & TV event will feature new awards tailored to the new television category, but the awards show is also shaking things up by combining television and film performances in award categories. For example, TV and film roles are both included in the Best Villain category, with nominees including both the Demogorgon from Stranger Things and Alison Williams for Get Out.

But, some aspects of the MTV awards ceremony will remain unchanged. So, don't worry, Best Kiss is still a category, even if there are several exciting shake-ups happening at this year's show. With these changes in mind and the announcement of A-List performances at the event, there are a lot of reasons to tune in on Sunday, May 7. Here are all of the things to look forward to at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

CNN reported that MTV revamped its categories for the 2017 show. The Best Fight category has been reimagined given the current political climate to become Best Fight Against The System. Nominees for the new category include: Get Out, Hidden Figures, Loving, Luke Cage, and Mr. Robot.

CNN quoted MTV president Chris McCarthy discussing these changes, and he said, "We have to constantly be pushing ourselves to not only respond to culture but lead it." Seems like MTV is certainly attempting to.

The Performances

As usual, the MTV Movie & TV Awards has some star-studded performances lined up, with E! online reporting that J Balvin (with Camila Cabello and Pitbull), Noah Cyrus, and Big Sean are slated to appear.

The same CNN piece listed above also discussed the announcement of the awards show's best actor categories becoming gender-neutral. The categories are now "Best Actor In A Movie" (nominees like Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures are alongside Hugh Jackman for Logan) and "Best Actor In A Show (with nominees including both Millie Bobby Brown for Stranger Things and Atlanta's Donald Glover).

There are a lot of changes to look forward to at this year's event. And, nothing is off limits when it comes to live TV. It looks like there are a lot of exciting reasons to watch the MTV Movie & TV Awards on May 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
