Tessa Thompson Showed Her Support For Female Directors In The Coolest Sweater

Women boldly, loudly, and professionally supporting other women is always in style. It's also more critical than ever in the wake of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements sweeping through Hollywood. And fashion definitely has a role in the movement. Actor Tessa Thompson wore a custom red sweater bearing the first names of female directors, and it was simply everything. The long-sleeved, crimson top showed support for four important and talented women artisans in lovely, flowing, and metallic script.

Thompson, known for her role in Thor: Ragnarok, essentially offered a "shirt shout out" to Ava DuVernay, Greta Gerwig, Patty Jenkins, and Dee Rees.

While actor Natalie Portman called out the cold, hard fact that no women were nominated in the Best Director category at the 2018 Golden Globes, Thompson followed her lead and celebrated female directors through fashion.

She slayed the statement shirt, wearing it to a Sundance panel on Monday, Jan. 22. It was a custom design by Lingua Franca NYC, the same designer that created Connie Britton's now-infamous "Poverty Is Sexist" sweater at this year's Globes.

Thompson also tweeted about her sweater, revealing that she plans to outwardly demonstrate her fangirldom for others with future shirts. She also pledged to forever clap back about inequality for women in the workplace until it no longer exists.

Here is Thompson's full, fashionable, and feminist presentation. She paired her top with black bottoms and matching, patent leather booties. Her ensemble was stylish AF, while the message was perfectly executed. If you want to make statements in a similar way, cruise on over to the Lingua Franca site to request a custom order. If you aren't sure what custom phrase you'd like to immortalize in a sweater at this point, that's OK. You can order tops from the LF for Time's Up collection or The Resistance Series, which also speak volumes.

The Lingua Franca tops carry a $380 price tag, but with good reason. The material is 100 percent cashmere and charitable. The sweaters are hand-embroidered and hand-stitched in NYC, which justifies the price. But know this. Lingua Franca will donate $100 from each purchase to the charity of the buyer's choice. You just need to indicate your chosen organization when checking out. So there's that.

Of course the Twitterverse had plenty to say about Thompson's top. How could it not?! DuVernay, director of the upcoming big budget flick A Wrinkle in Time, expressed her love for the shirt. She also expounded upon its sentiment with her response.

Other Twitter users were all about Thompson's sweater and suggested an entire collection inspired by it.

The internet wants Lingua Franca to take its money.

And here's exactly why! The power of the names and the spirit of the shirt is palpable. And that feeling spreads. Women want to express their support for one another through items of clothing.

Lingua Franca is grabbing plenty of headlines as of late, thanks to its offerings. These shirts will continue to serve as a voice of and for the #MeToo and #TimesUp initiatives.

Apparel is having a serious moment as an agent of change in 2018 — from the all-black gowns at the Golden Globes to the Time's Up pins. If you've ever labored under the illusion that fashion is frivolous, the Lingua Franca NYC shirts should assist in correcting that misconception. These tops declare not only what side of history the wearer is on. But they are also bolstered by a charity component. How bold, how beautiful.
