Spoilers ahead for The Last Jedi. The release of a new movie in the Star Wars universe always brings mixed emotions for viewers. Of course, there's plenty of excitement and joy at getting to reunite with beloved characters and learn what happens next, but there's also often a good amount of sadness, too. For one thing, the debut of a new film in the series means there's going to be a long while until another one comes around, but more than that, there's the knowledge that Star Wars movies contain their fair share of tragedy. And as you'll see from the below list of who dies in The Last Jedi, the newest installment in the franchise is no exception.

For many months now, fans have speculated about which Star Wars characters might not make it out alive of the new film, out Dec. 15. Would one of our beloved heroes lose their lives in a tragic fight, perhaps, or would an evil force be taken down in a way that'll have us cheering in our seats? Well, we now know all the answers, and the list is bittersweet, to say the least. Here are all the people who die in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and what their deaths might mean for the future of the franchise.

1. Luke

Yes, it really happens. Luke Skywalker is gone, having reached Jedi balance towards the very end of the film. He one-ups Kylo Ren during a major confrontation scene, and when all is said and done, he collapses on a rock and disappears. His death is noted by both Leia and Rey, but they're relieved to know that he seemed at peace when he went. Fear not, though — Luke is not the last Jedi, and there'll be more characters coming up to take his place.

2. Snoke

In one of the Last Jedi's coolest scenes, Snoke bites the dust. Rey and Kylo are facing off, and Snoke wants Kylo to finish his opponent and embrace the dark side for good. But instead, Kylo shocks everyone by getting a lightsaber to cut Snoke in half, killing his former leader.

3. Holdo

Laura Dern's Amilyn Holdo dies after sacrificing herself for the greater good. As the commanding officer for the Resistance when Leia is unconscious, Holdo chooses to let her fighters escape and go towards safety, while she alone stays on the ship and prepares for inevitable death.

4. Admiral Ackbar

Poor Ackbar. The character is one of many Rebels killed by enemy forces early on in the movie.

5. Captain Phasma... Maybe

It appears towards the end of The Last Jedi that Finn helps take down the evil Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), in a satisfying moment that comes after she calls him "scum." "Rebel scum," he proudly responds. But whether Phasma is really dead is up in the air, as she's survived plenty of battle before and could make a return.

6. Rose's Sister

Paige, a Resistance fighter, is killed during the movie's first few minutes by the First Order. Rose grieves her sister's death and fights to do her justice throughout the rest of the film.

7. Many Stormtroopers

Many First Order players go down in The Last Jedi, and a whole lot of those deaths are by the hands of Rey and Kylo, during their epic team-up battle scene.

8. And Many Members Of The Resistance, Too

Sadly, it's not just the First Order that takes losses. Far too many rebels lose their lives fighting the enemy and doing their best to protect the light.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has its share of funny, lighthearted moments, but it also has plenty of tear-jerking scenes bound to affect even the strongest of viewers. Enjoy the movie, but prepare yourself — you're in for one emotional, tragedy-filled ride.
