Greta Van Susteren & MSNBC Are Splitting

Less than a year ago, it seemed shocking that a longtime Fox news anchor was leaving the network for one with a reputation for leaning toward the opposite end of the political spectrum. Now, reporter Greta Van Susteren is parting ways with MSNBC. Bustle has reaching out to MSNBC for comment on the reasoning behind the split.

Vanity Fair was the first publication to break the news to the public, citing "people familiar with the situation." Around the same time, Van Susteren's own Twitter account verified it with a short and sweet tweet that reads, "I am out at MSNBC." The network has already secured MSNBC chief legal correspondent Ari Melber as a permanent replacement for Van Susteren's primetime 6 p.m. ET weekday slot. He will be on the air beginning in July. MSNBC president Phil Griffin sent a message to the network's employees to inform them of the switch:

MSNBC and Greta Van Susteren have decided to part ways. Greta is a well-regarded television veteran and one of only a few broadcasters who can say they've hosted shows at all three major cable news networks. We are grateful to her and wish her the best. Please join me in wishing Greta well as she departs. We have enjoyed having her on our air and we’re thankful to her and the show team.

It's difficult to tell from the memo whether or not Van Susteren was fired or decided to leave of her own accord. On Thursday, her husband, John Coale, told CNN Money, however, that the network had supposedly made the decision to drop her.

"They let her go," he claimed. "We're working out contract issues now."

Speaking on the background, an MSNBC executive told Politico that Van Susteren's shows wasn't receiving the desired ratings, but that the network's relationship with her is still "amicable."

Coincidentally, Van Susteren's departure from MSNBC wasn't the only reason the network made headlines on Thursday. Trump enraged much of the nation when he slammed MSNBC's Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski on Twitter for allegedly "bleeding badly from a face-lift" during a New Year's Eve get-together previously. He also referred to her as "low I.Q. Crazy Mika" on Twitter. Democrats and Republicans alike criticized the president for insulting both a woman's appearance and intellect.

During her time at MSNBC, Van Susteren wasn't subject to Trump's Twitter criticism but didn't hesitate to tell him to get ahold of his attitude toward the media. Prior to working at MSNBC, Van Susteren had spent 14 years at Fox. It's not yet clear what she plans on doing next.
