Here's Why Selena Is Missing The VMAs

Even though she's nominated for two awards, Selena Gomez isn't at the 2017 VMAs. While fans of the singer will surely miss seeing her on one of music's biggest nights, it sounds like Gomez has a good reason for skipping the show that has to do with the other side of her career: acting. According to Elle, Gomez is likely filming her next movie in New York during the VMAs. The 25-year-old is set to star alongside Elle Fanning and Timothée Chalamet in a currently-untitled Woody Allen film due out next year.

As Elle reports, Fanning and Chalamet both shared on Instagram Stories that they are in New York, and Gomez's assistant also shared posts about herself and Gomez flying to New York. Gomez herself hasn't commented on being in New York for filming, but did post caption-less Instagram pictures of both of her costars on Saturday.

A work conflict is a solid reason to not appear at the show, and it was pretty much a given that Gomez would have attended had she not had a career commitment. The pop star is up for two Moon People, one for Best Collaboration with Charlie Puth for "We Don't Talk Anymore" and one for Best Dance Video with Kygo for "It Ain't Me". On top of that, Gomez's boyfriend, The Weeknd is performing at the show and he's up for five awards: Video of the Year, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Editing for "Reminder", and Artist of the Year.

While Gomez is missing the show this time around, she has been releasing new music recently, so perhaps she'll find herself nominated once again — and not too busy — next year.
