'This Is Us' Is No Longer Nominated For This Emmy

If you're a fan of This Is Us, there's probably a strong chance that you weren't able to make it through the show's first season with dry eyes. But now, as the time-hopping drama gears up for its second season, it seems as though fans have a different reason to be a bit sad, since This Is Us just lost one of its 11 Emmy nominations. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report that the drama's Emmy nomination for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes was revoked on Friday. NBC declined to comment. The Television Academy issued to the following statement to CNN:

"Having reviewed the 'Moonshadow' episode of This Is Us, the Awards Committee noted that the entrant unfortunately miscalculated the proportion of scenes that were period versus contemporary. In fact, the episode is predominately period. The entry (and subsequent nomination) are thereby disqualified."

So, basically This Is Us will not get a chance to win or lose this Emmy; the drama will be removed from consideration. According to THR, This Is Us' space on the ballot will be replaced with House of Cards, which now gives the Netflix drama seven total nominations. Big Little Lies, Grace and Frankie, Empire, and Transparent are among the other shows listed in the category.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Emmy rules state that at least 51% of an episode's costumes must be in a setting that takes place within the last 25 years for it to be eligible for the Outstanding Contemporary Costumes category. This Is Us is a show in which the storytelling takes place in the past and present, but the present-day part of the episode submitted, the Season 1 finale titled "Moonshadow," apparently managed to fall a little short.

"Moonshadow" features multiple flashbacks, as it mostly follows how Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) first met, all while tying up the loose ends of the storylines that take place in the present. Unfortunately, as the Television Academy stated, most of the episode is considered period rather than contemporary.

The fact that the episode lost its Emmy nomination is sad to hear but knowing that This Is Us is still up for ten more Emmys should be enough to soothe the hearts of fans. Plus, Season 2 premieres on Sept. 26, so get ready for the Pearsons to return to your TV screens.
