Keanu Reeves Would Consider A 'Matrix' Reboot

There's nothing Hollywood loves more than rebooting a popular franchise, and The Matrix could be the latest series to get the revival treatment. The original trilogy starred Keanu Reeves as Neo, a computer programmer with an important fate, and featured groundbreaking special effects like "bullet-time." Visionary filmmakers the Wachowskis were responsible for writing and directing the movie, but right now it's unclear whether the original creative team would return for a reboot. Perhaps the most important question to ask, though, is will Keanu Reeves be in The Matrix reboot? The actor certainly hasn't ruled out the possibility.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reboot is in the early stages of development, with no lead star attached at present. However, THR reported that, according to sources, "there is potential interest in Michael B. Jordan to star." As a major fan of Michael B. Jordan's many talents, he's a great choice for the lead in a Matrix reboot. But fans of the original series shouldn't rule out Reeves just yet, as the actor recently said in an interview that he'd consider coming back to the role.

In Feb. 2017, Reeves told Yahoo Movies that he'd consider returning to the franchise, but stipulated that "The Wachowskis would have to be involved." Fans will likely agree that the co-directors have a unique filmmaking style and create truly beautiful cinematic universes. Without them on board, The Matrix would be a totally different movie.

Reeves confirmed his commitment to only working with The Wachowskis on any sequel to The Matrix, telling Yahoo Movies, "They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?" Having recently promoted John Wick 2, Reeves has proven how great he still is as an action star, and it'd be super exciting to see him reprise his role in The Matrix in some way, even if another actor becomes the lead.

However, according to THR, "it is likely that Warners will look elsewhere to attract an A-list director and star," meaning that the next movie in The Matrix franchise might take the story in a completely new direction. Luckily, this is only speculation about what the reboot of the popular sci-fi movie will look like, and it's not totally out of the question that Reeves will return. Because, seriously, he needs to.

Screenwriter Zak Penn, who's been involved with several high profile superhero movies, including The Avengers, is currently drafting a script. It's likely to be quite some time before the movie starts shooting and the casting gets finalized, so keep Neo in your thoughts, please.
