Watch The New 'Justice League' Trailer To See Superman's Possible Return

by Mary Kate McGrath

The new trailer for DC's Justice League dropped on Sunday, and it's an intense, action packed glimpse at the film. The teaser opens with a dream sequence from Lois Lane, and it will have fans wondering if Superman will return in Justice League. The dream may have been included to serve as an emotional preface, but there are definite hints that the superhero could be back. The theme of trailer seems to be reunion; while the first sneak peak introduced the characters and the star studded cast (Jason Momoa! Ben Affleck! Gal Gadot!), this shows the team coming together. The world is in shambles, and the league will be up against apocalyptic circumstances. In the face of the destruction, these heroes will find each other and get to the root of the world's issues. The big question is whether or not Superman join them on their mission.

In the opening moment of the trailer, Lois Lane (Amy Adams) steps out onto her porch and looks out on a peaceful cornfield. She finds Superman (Henry Cavill), or rather Clark Kent (as he isn't wearing a costume), standing at the center. "I'll take that as a yes," he says and turns to look at her. On her finger is an engagement ring, and as dirt falls through her fingers the actual Lois Lane wakes up and returns to reality, where she has no ring and the world is mourning the loss of Superman. It also reveals that "violence, acts of war, and terrorism" are all on the rise, and the trailer then cuts to reveal that the world is facing mass devastation. The league will act in honor of Superman's legacy, but it seems suspicious that the trailer would focus on the hero if the series didn't intend to bring him back into the fold.

Fans of the DC Universe know that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ended with Superman losing his life. The hero was no match for the formidable Doomsday, and even fighting alongside Batman and Wonder Woman was unable to fight off the monster. He was ultimately impaled with a spear of kryptonite, but the franchise left some room for his fate to change. At the end of the film, the dirt on Superman's coffin begins to move, suggesting that his end might not be permanent. The dirt was an important hint that the hero could survive, and it's a motif that repeats itself in the opening moment with Lois Lane of the Justice League trailer. It isn't clear when or where Superman might reappear in the film, but his absence will allow Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) to rebuild the justice league in the meantime.

This trailer has a different mood than the previous promo, which aired at L.A. Comic Con in March. In this preview the characters reflect on the loss of their fellow hero and the scale of the world's destruction is revealed, which provides for some emotional moments. While the film will have plenty of dramatic explosion and butt-kicking action scenes, this new clip adds emotional stakes to the battle. It shows Batman standing at a monument to Superman that reads, "If you seek his monument, look around you." While this could imply that the league is acting in his honor, it could also be a hint that superman is out there and worth finding.

The snippet also shows some of the banter and dynamic between the heroes. Aquaman insists that he is stronger alone, which will cause tension as Bruce Wayne tries to bring heroes together. The Flash, played by Ezra Miller, gets overexcited about the Bat Signal. Wonder Woman shares a wry smile with Batman, which might imply some sort of deeper connection between the heroes. Cyborg (Ray Fisher) stops Aquaman from falling into space mid-battle, and the two share a moment of gratitude. It looks like the League will face some major challenges in this film, so their bond as a team will be even more important.

Justice League will be in theaters on November 17th. The Joss Whedon-directed film has an impressive roster of stars, including Robin Wright, J.K. Simmons, Amber Heard, Billy Crudup, Jeremy Irons, Connie Nielsen, and Ciaran Hinds. Fans will have to wait for the premiere to find out if Cavill's Superman has survived his last battle in the DC universe.
