Zsa Zsa Gabor's Adopted Son Died A Week After Her

When it rains, it pours and it unfortunately appears to be pouring on the von Anhalt family. According to TMZ, just a week after the death of Zsa Zsa Gabor, her adopted son Oliver von Anhalt died of an injury sustained from a motorcycle accident on Muholland Drive in Los Angeles. The forty-five-year-old's accident happened on the same day as the heart attack that would lead to Gabor's death. The middle-aged socialite died on Sunday, December 25 after being in a coma since the accident. TMZ reports his adopted father and Gabor's last of nine husbands, Frédéric von Anhalt was not even aware of his son's accident and wasn't notified until a day after the death —in fact, he allegedly thought Oliver von Anhalt was in Germany.

The von Anhalt family is anything but traditional. According to CNN, Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt and Gabor were in the practice of adopting adult males. These men would get the von Anhalt name, and with it, a slice of legally royal blood. Interestingly enough, Frédéric Prinz isn't even naturally a von Anhalt, having been adopted himself as an adult in 1980 by Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt when she adopted thirty-five men that were all given the title, Prince of Anhalt. Frédéric Prinz specifically styles himself as, "Prince Frédéric of Anhalt, Duke of Saxony and Westphalia, Count of Ascania."

Oliver van Anhalt was born in Germany as Oliver Bendig, but exchanged the name for a slightly more royal one when he made his way to Los Angeles.
