Though designer handbag trends don’t fluctuate as much as, say, clothing, they do change from time to time. Inspired by the runway, social media, and even television, handbag lovers go for different looks, depending on what’s in style at the moment.

Rebag, one of the top resale sites for leather goods, watches, and jewelry, has been watching shopping trends wax and wane for almost a decade. In 2019, the brand made it official, with the launch of Clair (Comprehensive Luxury Assessment Index for Resale), a tool designed to help buyers and sellers determine the current resale value for their most coveted luxury items.

Pulling from shopping data generated by that tool, Rebag releases an annual report about which items are selling, and which are falling by the wayside.

This year is predictably all about 2000s fashion, a trend we’ve seen reflected everywhere from the runway to the red carpet. Bustle caught up with Charles Gorra, founder and CEO of Rebag, to take a deep dive into the data, and find out which bags will be trending in the new year.

We only include products that have been independently selected by Bustle's editorial team. However, we may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

With a return to 2000s movies, TV shows, and fashion, it’s no surprise that designer bags are following suit. “There’s increased interest in the Prada Re-Nylon Re-Edition hobo, which can be due to the recent early aughts reissues by the brand,” says Gorra. “The Fendi Baguette is also doing well, thanks to Fendi’s 2019 revival of the iconic bag, and And Just Like That.” The Balenciaga City, Louis Vuitton Pochette Accessories, and the Fendi Vintage Tote are also experiencing a newfound resurgence.

Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel are in high demand for both buyers and sellers, and Gorra says that won’t change anytime soon. “It’s no surprise that the Hermès Birkin, Louis Vuitton Neverfull, and the Chanel Classic Flap consistently remain among Rebag’s top sellers. The bags prove they stand the test of time, regardless of what’s trending at the moment.”

Neutral Color Handbags

Though handbags that provide a pop of color to your outfit are always fun, neutral colors are always on trend. “Our customers gravitate towards neutral colors that go with anything,” says Gorra. The most popular colors, no matter the brand or handbag style, are consistently brown, black, and blue.

‘Less Is More’ Logos

Though ’90s logo-mania surely had its moment in the sun, understated logos are more sought after today. Think: classic, iconic, and “not too loud,” according to Gorra.

Oversized Handbags

Though they haven’t hit their peak just yet, Rebag has seen a growing love for oversized bags. So next year, you might consider a large handbag instead of a micro mini. “We could see oversize totes and hobos becoming big trends,” says Gorra. “Hobos like the Prada Cleo, or a similar silhouette in leather, are seeing a comeback.”

Bright Colors

ReBag has seen a huge uptick in brightly colored bags, regardless of style. As the team shared, “with the tumultuous state of the world, we all need a little something to brighten out day.” And, when it comes to color, the rainbow rules supreme, with each one on the spectrum present and accounted for. ReBag further shared, “Think poppy hues of orange, yellow, Yves Klein blue, Kelly green, and […] Elsa Schiaparelli’s signature Shocking Pink.”

Crochet Craze

Summer is fast approaching, and crochet bags coming on strong. “Anything woven is on trend for 2022,” shares the team, adding, “with Chloé showing macramé bags, as well as Loewe’s crocheted crossbodies.

The early aughts are back and swinging, with all your favorite trends of the decade here for another trip around the sun. According to ReBag, shoppers are loving the Lady Dior, Balenciaga City, and more. Additionally, “with Bottega Veneta showing an updated version of its Knot Clutch on its Fall/Winter 2022 runway, we predict that style could be making a comeback soon as well,” says the reseller.

Fall Florals

“Florals aren’t just for spring,” the ReBag team says, adding, “The Fall/Winter 2022 runways of Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Fendi showcased bags covered in fanciful floral prints.” It’s time to jump on the trend for spring, and wear it straight through fall and winter, too.

Graphic Geometry

With a head-turning vibe, stronger graphic prints are becoming more and more popular when it comes to your handbags. Accordng to Rebag, “a lot of the Fall/Winter 2022 runways showcased bold geometric patterns.” From Gabriela Hearst to Prada, Fendi, and more, it’s time to take a cue from the big and the bold when shopping for that statement-making handbag this season.
